I am about to build a DIY 70W MH hood for a 5.5 gallon tank and was wondering how safe it is to install the HQI sockets directly onto wood (separated only by a thin sheet of aluminum which is going to act as reflector). The hood is going to have two 80 mm fans( one blowing air in and the other out). Im not very familliar with heat output of MH (HQI) since I am using PC AND T5 bulbs. Is it going to be as hot as those double ended halogen bulbs found in motion sensor light or torchier lamps? Any advice.? Thanks!!

I'm pretty sure you will need a chiller, and definately an auto topoff since evaporation will be out of control. Unless you're loaded, I would go topless or cover the top with a piece of glass to control evap. It looks clean, actually
