I am wondering if water flow and a wave box produce the same effect. Now that Tunze has come out with their "new" wave box, is it necessary to have so much water flow going through your sump?????

I have a question, if I have a Tunze stream, a Tunze wavebox ,is this enough "flow" in my tank to reduce the amount of water that goes through my sump?

I realize that the water that goes through the sump gets cleaned due to the different filters, but, if my skimmer "cleans" 1,800 gph and the water flow through my sump to my tank is 2,400 gph, it is obvious that not all the water that goes through the sump gets cleaned.... So is it now so necessary to send so much water to your sump?

What is your opinion????

You could easily eliminate 1 of your mag 12s if your fuge is right below your display. You definately don't need that much flow thru your sump. Your 120 is it 4' of 6' long? I have a 4x2x2 and am using a mag 9 for my return, one vortech, and wavebox as well as a few nano streams to prevent dead spots in my tank. If you have large sps colonies you may need more flow via powerheads but if it's a mixed reef you would be ok.

i think most people are now aiming for 3-5x turnover through their sump, which puts your 120 gallon at 360-600 gph through the sump.

OK. I read that it should be 12 to 15. times.... My tank is 4 x 2 x 2

I think that it is important to have good flow in the display, I dont think you need more than 5x/hr going through your sump. What skimmer are you running?

Really the most you need is what your skimmer can handle. Any thing above that is just making more micro bubbles and using more power that could be used for circulation actually in the tank.

Got it... I need to replace my Mag 12's since they are 5 years old. I am thinking of placing one back on my skimmer. What 2 Mag's should I place on the returns?

i agree im of the opinion more flow in the display and less through the sump.. .. works well for me.. i try to stay at 1-3X turnover in the sump

Could you get a mag 9 or mag 12 and "T" it for both of your returns? I would look into doing something like that.

That is what I am doing. 2inch tee to 3/4 barbed fittings running off a mag 12. Thats on my 4x2x2 tank.
