6500k "Daylight bulbs" work best.

I've been using a daylight 100 watt equivalent spiral type since I set my tank up with out any problems. 6 bucks at Home Depot. I just set up a whole new sump system and i'm now using 3 of them. They work great and they never get very hot. Also on a side note i switched all the bulbs in the house over to the 60 watters and my electric bill droped to less then what it was before i set the tank up.
