So I finally decided to go ahead and spend all the kids college funds on a tank, but since they are only 4 and 6 years old I might have time to refund their college funds by the time they need it :)

The system:
All glass aquarium.
Display tank: 84"L x 22"W x 24"H 192 Gallons
Sump: 48"L x 16"W x 14"H 65 Gallons
Fuge: 30"L x 20"W x 12"H 37 Gallons

Hardware so far:
3 Lumen Bright mini
3 coral vue Ballast 250W
3 Reeflux 12K
1 Reeflo Orca 200 Skimmer
1 PM 22"H x 4 Dia fluidizer reactor (for charcoal)
1 Phosban 150 (for phosphate)
1 DIY Coil denitrator.
1 100 G/Day 5 stage RO/DI from the Filters Guys Ocean reef + 1
1 Reeflo Snapper pump for the entire system.
1 Profilux controler with PH and temp probe
1 3 station dosing pump for automatic water change (2 gallons per day)
2 500 watts titanium heater

The profilux controller will be taking care of the ATO, water change, light and heating.
Here are some picts of this weekend efforts.

I will use my dosing pump 1 and 2 to do the water change. For the ATO I have normally closed selenoid valve on the my RO/DI feed to my sump
As you can see in this picture:

I never understood why people finish the stand in place. Seems like more work to me and not all the edges get sealed.
Oh well.... I still think its turning out fantastic.

how do you like your prolifux controller? What about the dosing consol? Are you going to feed your Ca reactor through that or you are going with the balling method?

So far i haven't done anything with the Dosing pumps, one pumps is to purge salt water and the other one is too put fresh salt water, the third one is to be determined. I'm open to suggestion for the last pump.....

Hey there! I'm thoroughly enjoying your thread so far.. Beautiful stand, by the way. :)

One of the LFS' I used work at would give people a small amount of ammonia with some live sand. That is a nice way to do a fishless cycle, which is better for several reasons: no need to rip your tank apart trying to catch nasty Damsels, and it's cruelty-free.

Another method people like to use is getting a fresh jumbo prawn/shrimp from the meat section of a grocery store and letting that sit in there until it rots.

OR...

You can buy some uncured live rock and cure it in the tank. That'll jumpstart the cycle nicely!

I'm sure there are more methods as well, but these are the ones I'm familiar with and have used.

Good luck with your choice. I'm excited to see how your tank progresses!

kidney514
04/10/2008, 07:53 AM
How do you procure yourself amonia?

kidney514
04/10/2008, 07:57 AM
Ya, how many damsel do you think I would need to have to start my cycle in a 300 gallons system. Like 20, no way man, they are impossible to catch after that...... I like your ammonia trick.

Would you mind telling a newbe how the 3 station dosing pump for automatic water change (you said you wanted to change 2 gallons per day) works? I was trying to determine this from your plumbing photos but could not work it out.

Actually here it is:
http://maison.bradshaw-tremblay.com:16080/Site/Our_Albums/Pages/Aquarium_files/Media/IMG_5432/IMG_5432.jpg

Pump#1 is fresh water and #3 is old water.

StePerth
04/11/2008, 09:01 AM
I am not using anything just yet. I was/am trying to understand how you are achieving Automatic Water Change.

kidney514
04/11/2008, 09:09 AM
Well I have one pump the purge salt water from the tank to the drain (from midnight to 4AM old water and from 4am to 8am new salt water). You have to remember that dosing pump are not made to run continuously, so that is why it takes so long to a water change. Every 15 minutes i pump 900ml and then let the pump rest 15 mins, That gives me 8 sessions of 900ml between 12:00 and 4:00 and its the same with fresh salt water.

I also have another circulation pump in the Fresh salt water tank that start @ 3:30 till 4:00 just to make sure the Fresh salt water is well stirred before pumping it to the tank.

Some Good info here,
I should have my Profilux Controller mid next week and want to do the same thing. Automate water changes and ATO. I would imagine that if you wished to speed the water change process up you could use a pump instead of the dosing unit, would this be correct??

Cheers
Tony

kidney514
04/11/2008, 08:48 PM
Yup, you can use the a pump instead, but you have to understand that slow is good, less shock for your inhabitant.....

Imagine doing a 25% water change on a 200 gallons (50gallons) tanks in one day, that will and should create a level of stress on the population of you tanks...

Now imagine doing that same 25% over 30 days, that is under 2 gallons per day, I really doubt that the fish would even notice that it happened....

just my .02 cents

I would suggest that you change your pump for Sequence reeflo, even where all my pump are I don't hear them at all...

My 2500GPH snapper is completely silent if you ask me....
The most annoying thing now in my setup is the 2 tunze 6100 in my tanks, the pulsating noise they make drives me nuts.... Looking for a solutions too that!

But your pump is in the garage, correct? My pump is in my stand. I did not know about the idea of adding a mousepad or maybe two, to reduce the vibration pf the pump. Everything has been running for 6+ months. I really don't have enough room to lift the pump up to place the mousepad underneath it. I would have to cut the PVC piping and adjust it, considering the pump is also plumbed to the sump. Any suggestions, let me know.

Nope my pump is one gyproc away from my living room. I would bet that if it was under my aquarium it would as silent as it is now...

Maybe this help.

I agree with the Tunze's the constant HMMMMM mmmmm HMMMMM mmmm drove me mad too, especially in a quiet house at night when you cant sleep!

Got it @ Reef solutions, was a pure coincidence, wasn't looking for him, but lets just says that when I saw him, there was no doubt in my minf that he was coming home, actually, there was a doubt when I heard the price, but I was already in love with him, and wasn't a brilliant move cuz he wasn't eating anything and they told me that he hadn't eaten since they got him, but I was sure that he would be happy in my empty tank instead of that 2 x 3 cell he was in.....

Just try to feed 5 minutes ago before going to bed and he hate 5 or 6 piece of brine shrimp, so I have hope for him.

Yeah i lost the achilles, he was not interested in any kind of food even when i was feeding 5 times a day, he showed no interest at all.

If your naso is eating, i have no doubt he will do better in the days to come!

Careful they dont fight, Tangs hate each other in small numbers, if the colours are totally opposite such as a sail fin and blue regal they tend to tolerate each other, but too closer species type and war breaks out.

Just my own experience, but thought i would pass it on.

Lorin, if you are thinking of filling the tank with tangs, seriously consider ozone, it will be invaluable for keeping the itch at bay, the Tangs biggest enemy.

kar93
04/14/2008, 07:23 AM
Ive noticed then when adding tangs if they are the same size or similar they just sort of check each other out rather than fight. Apparently a mirror on the side of the tank works aswell.

kidney514
04/14/2008, 07:24 AM

AQD_ottawa
04/14/2008, 07:27 AM
Good thought, also consider what I said about ozone, love it or hate it and there are many on both sides of the fence but you will find it a must with a tank of tangs.

When I was in the UK, one of my customers introduced 4 tangs, the stress brought out white spot that infested the whole tank, I put ozone on it for him and he never had a problem again.

Again, just an oppinion based on experience.

Yer I know, they sparkle like spring water.

I think the main concern is the fear based on human health concerns, I wont go into here as it will detract from the intention of this thread. But to date nobody has died from ozone, but many have had theyre health be improved by its uses.

As i said massive subject, with little credible education. Not even the CSA will approve units for domestic useage as they do not understand it.

I have intention of putting ozone, but you recommanded to wait 6 month.....

AQD_ottawa
04/14/2008, 08:29 AM
Yes, I did not know you would be putting tangs in your system as a first fish.

A system needs to be mature before adding ozone as it will not mature naturally if ozone is put in at the beginning, but saying that if you are suffering from ammonia spikes or residual nitrite you can burn much of this off with ozone, BUT only do this if all else fails, golden rule, when maturing a system keep as natural as possible, cycle slowly and in doing so make sure the tanks ecosystem builds a natural foundation, then you can start adding ozone later on in 6 months to 18 months, the later the better.

My advise, do nothing unless you have a problem.

Aaronovky
04/14/2008, 01:12 PM
what is the ozone?

AQD_ottawa
04/14/2008, 01:27 PM
EEK where do I start

Ok simple terms as I dont want this thread to get of topic. Ozone is a naturally forming gas in the enviroment, but it is also the most powerful naturally occuring sterlization agent known to man. basically anything living that comes in contact with it is oxidise or turned to oxygen.

It is a bi product of electrostatic emmision, when air is subject to high static charges the surrounding atmosphere is oxidised and thus produces ozone, this can be seen on still shots on a lightening bolt as a blue/purple ora.

Aaronovky
04/14/2008, 01:31 PM
and its good for your water

AQD_ottawa
04/14/2008, 01:37 PM
Basically yes.

ozone is injected via your skimmer air intake, the gas mixes with the fine micro bubbles burning off any thing in the water it comes in contact with. That being parasites, nitrite, ammonia, nitrate to a degree although not over effeciently, tannins, odour, you name it. This burn off is then skimmed out of the water.

This is the reason you never inject ozone directly into your tank, you must allow sufficient contact time for ozone to break back down in oxygen. This is why it is dosed in low doses and also making sure sufficient contact time is allowed, but saying that ozone is so unstable it pretty much reverts to oxygen the moment is makes contact with water.

Aaronovky
04/14/2008, 01:43 PM
do you get it in an oxygen tank sort of thing and use it like a CO2 bottle for reactors?

kar93
04/14/2008, 01:47 PM
This is an ozone, The one ill be getting eventually:
http://www.jlaquatics.com/images/ozonizer/redsea_deluxe.jpg
Lets get back OT now.

AQD_ottawa
04/14/2008, 01:48 PM
No it is generated in an ozone generator.

Basic concept - high static charge applied to a wire or insulated plate, air passes over wire or between plates and becomes high charged, in doing so ozone is produced (bi product of oxidised air = ozone) the gas is then pushed or sucked out of the chamber or from between the plates.

Two types of designs on the market, wire induction - pros highly efficient, cons - wire oxidises in time can not be cleaned or replaced and wire either snaps or ozone production falls off

Static plate discharge - can be cleaned, does not wear out, cons - needs regular cleaning.

Just go to find one, I can't order in the US, so I have to find one locally, also today I noticed that my tanks @ the office is not doing well, it's about to split open, so I might need to relocate my fish and coral home. I have to decide if i fix the tank or shut it down.

List of species @ office.
1 Bi-color angel 2"
2 Golden stripped maroon clownfish
1 mandarin
1 serientis
1 bubble tip
1 brain
1 crocea clam
1 Huge hermitt crab
1 Lobster (mia) but probably hidden somewhere under a rock.
some snail, 2 blue leg hermitt and other unknown stuff.

That tank is mature in every way, 7 continuous years of marine fish tanks, and the silicone and brace seem to have enought!

OK the transplantation is done, my office tank was really bad, there was a bow off ,5" on the front glass, the brace was broken and the silicone was peeling, I guess after 8 years it was due. Anyways all off this happened a bit too fast, I really wish that my tanks would have more mature before such a transfer and it probably going to stress my Naso like hell, but on the good side I just added 60 lbs of 8 years old live rock.

New specise list:
2 Golden Stripped Maroon Clownfish with their host Bubble tip anemone
1 Mandarine
1 Bi-Color Angel
2 Blue leg hermit crabe
1 Astrea snail
1 Lobster
1 Naso Blonde Male Tang
1 Brain
1 Mushroom
1 Anemone Serientis
1 Large hermitt crabe

kar93
04/18/2008, 05:56 PM
IMO Naso tangs are quite hardy and if your tank had cycled then it should be fine. It could have just been one of those things.
He looked healthy.

kidney514
04/18/2008, 06:02 PM
At the end of the day, I took a chance on a fish that wasn't eating at the LFS, I take full blame on that, but being told it's because my tank is immature turn me off!!! IMO an immature tank doesn't kill fish after 5 days, it takes a couple of week for fish to die from an immature tank. Not days! I really want to know if any other share the same opinion? That was going to die no mather what tank is was in!

kar93
04/18/2008, 06:09 PM
I think a fish will only die in an immature tank if it is sensitive and needs a mature tank e.g Pod eaters, pipefish, seahorse and mandarins etc. But tangs are pretty hardy fish and it would take more than an immature tank to kill them IMHO. Sure the Achilles and PBT which are sensitive tangs may have a hard time in a immature tank and may be more likely to get diseases than if they was in a mature tank. If it wasn't eating at the LFS i know that not many people would be prepared to take on that fish so kudos for that. Sorry for the long post but thats JMO.

The Cyanobacteria you have will in fact go away as soon as your tank matures a little more. If you have a high flow tank, it shouldn't take long at all.

I might have been wrong about the cyano, it might be simple algae.
I can't pickup like I would expect, and my snail are eating it, so I am assuming it's simple algae.
As far as the flow goes I have a Reeflo Hammerhead 5800GPH and 2 tunze 6100. I think that the flow should be OK, but i'm still switching my 6100 for 6200 that will be even more flow.

Cool, When are you getting the tangs? I wouldnt worry about 5 NO3 but getting them down to 0 would be ideal. I imagine it is from you having to quickly put all the livestock in there, Is it staying or are you getting a new tank and taking them back?

So far I have change my mind about the double band tang, after researching it, it only looks good on that picture, anywhere else he is very plain looking. I am waiting on the arrival of the achille tang, should be somewhere around may 15, but not sure.

I think they are a great fish but we all have our opinions. You will love the Achilles, up to a few weeks ago had only seen them in pics and photos and when I finally saw one in person, they are so elegant and unique! Just one tip though.....Be prepared for ich im not saying it will definitely get it but they are a sensitive fish but I imagine you already know all this.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but my LFS said that he may get the achille in small which is rare, and if they are small I might get 3 or 4 of them and that would be all for the tang familly.... But will see when they arrive.

kar93
05/05/2008, 07:59 AM
I think 3 or 4 would be a little too much, Due to them being sensitive if one get ich i assume the rest will, would your really want 4 tangs with ich? Another Naso would be great IMO and maybe a purple. That is what i would get anyway. Good Luck!

Well, my lfs seem to be convice that It can be sone if i let them acclimate in my fuge for a couple of week and then transfer them to the tank. Anyways all of this depends on the size when they arrive.

kar93
05/05/2008, 03:25 PM
You might want to post in Reef Discussion about it and see what others say before buying them. Some LFS's are good but it always best to confirm on here IMO.

Reeftanks6
05/05/2008, 07:16 PM
Yea i mean they are a great fish it just the level at which they are to keep which is very hard. I mean you dont want to buy an 80 dollar fish and see it die of ich trust me i had it happen as you already know kar. But know i am trying to get something to prevent the ich from coming back and learning more about the ich problem. But i dont think there is much out there that can protect it. But i am not sure.

kidney514
05/05/2008, 08:34 PM
UV can prevent ich very efficiently, I think you have the proper flow going into the UV to kill the ich.

Reeftanks6
05/06/2008, 04:42 AM
ok thank you but what size uv would i need for a 90.

FFrankie
05/06/2008, 05:54 AM
There is that assumption again. It's not about your tank size. You need to include all the water in your system. Do you have a sump? How much rock is displacing your water volume? I have a 120 but my total water volume is 195. I run a 25w uv 24/7.

kar93

Your PBT, sadly may have been the culprit of the death of your tankmates. The PBT is notoriously mean. There have many experiences here of PBTs being welcomed into a tank as they are so beautiful--only to come back later to discover all the tankmates dead.
I know you also stated that the PBT has white spots--maybe first stages of ick---hopefully that's not this case. Sorry Again about your lost.

Do you need an additional pump for that on a timer or using the same pump for the circulation for the reactor?

Also if you don't mind me asking, where do you purchased this automatic reactor??

Well, just got my Achilles tang after multiples (4) flight delay and landing at the airport 12 later than predicted. Its look in perfect health and is absolutely beautiful, he was even eating while I was doing the aclimatation...
So the PBT is acting as everyone would suspect he is being territorial, buy my achilles doesn't seem to be impress by it, when he has enough he just turn around the chases the PBT. My Naso and clowns don't seem to care about the new guy on the other hand I didn't expect my angel to be nasty, but man they are very nasty to him.

Well just got my long awaited 'Black Tang" really nice fish! acclimation went well, he is eating well. My achilles was not happy at all about the new guy, gave him hell until I decided to pull out the fish trap.....
I always feed my fish with the fish for the last 3 month, they are trained that way, the minute they see the fish trap they fight to get in and get the food. Hihihi So being trained like the minute they see that I pulled out the first trap the achille went directly in the fish trap to get food, sad to say but this time I closed the door and left him there for 10 minutes, and then let him out, after that closed the light for an hour, and all was good after, the achilles seem to leave the black tang alone now, will see tomorrow. Will try to post a picture of him.

Next fish on the list is the Goldflake Angel... let the search begin!

Wow, those containers are nice but no where near $400 nice. What was wrong with a couple of milk jugs?

Of course and I didn't pay that price either, have to be a mistake, I paid something like 269CAD, that is like 210USD.....
I will email them and let them know about that mistake.
