i have a 46 galon tank with ten gallon sump. i do not have a heater hooked up in my tank and my temperature still stays at 80 or 82. i would like it to be around 76. my mh is about a foot and a half away from the tank so i don't think that it would be heating the water that bad. what can i do?

A chiller or a fan blowing across the water would likely work.

I have 2 250W10k's and 2 110W vho's on my 90 mounted 10 inches above the water. 2 fans running. No heat build up. A good fan should do the job.

80-82 is ok if it stays there constantly. My reef is always 81.5-82

+1 on fans blowing across the surface. It'll give you a 3-5 degree drop in an hour or so.

80-82 is fine with just one small fan blowing over my lighting i can drop the temp 6 degrees so i recommend fans

i have a 760w metal halide 6" off the water and just have 2 fans from wal mart for $5 each that blow across during the summer. my tank fluctuates from 79.9 to 80.1 from night to day. makes evaporation rate a lot faster though and warms the house a little. i also live in oregon so the climate is fairly cool.

2 parts to the fan thing... I used to keep a fan blowing up across my MH pendant to blow the heat from the light away from the water surface. I also kept a fan blowing on the surface of my sump which really helped, but also really increased my evaporation, requiring more top-off's.

more top offs may be a good thing. if you have the time to do it this gives you more opportunity to change parameters in your tank, such as adding kalk, so i'm told.

Fans, Make sure you leave vent holes in the canopy it applicable. Fans across the sump is also a good way to do because then they are out of the way (and out of sight) and they will be fairly easy to mount under your stand.

I use exhaust fans in the canopy to remove heat build up from the light, and a 6" fan cliped to my sump pointing at the waters surface, it actually makes a ripple in the water.

I keep my heater set to 72F, it's on a lot.

just wondering if you get that much heat from your lights? 18" above the surface is pretty high IMO and maybe its coming from somewhere else, like a bad pump or something else that creating heat or electricity.
