hey all and Randy in particular ... i am trying to properly calibrate my Refrac. that i just got. I bought the pinpoint solution to use for this, but was unsure what it is set to ( the solution ) someone posted me back in another forum and said to ask advice here. I calibrated it as per the directions with RO/DI water or distilled, but got mixed reactions. If you could help clarify what the solution is at and why one is better than the other it would be a huge help! thank in advance...

I would just use some of the PinPoint to calibrate the unit. Set the SG at 1.0264 using this solution. The problem with RO/DI is that it's very different from saltwater:

+2....with bertoni
I always used RO/DI to calibrate my refractometer.
I bought the PinPoint....I had to adjust it down a tad...Now its dead on....A tad was....1.026 down to about 1.024 / 1.0245
It that a real big deal ????? ask the fish......But for $3.00 a bottle, I know its dead on now

Place the solution on the glass, read it, and reset it untill it reads 35ppt=1.0264 then your set. Forget using R/O DI to calibrate.
