View Full Version : Transition from formalin treatment...

In an earlier thread (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1363104) I started four chromis on a low-dose formalin treatment. Its been over a week, and I'm working on the assumption that by now (if it was something like Uronema) the formalin has done its work.

(Note: the chromis still have obvious damage (patches) on their bodies, but I'm assuming the formalin works to kill the parasite, but does not aid in healing the damage.)

I'd like to get a biological filter working so I don't have to do as many water changes. I have filter sponges, filter media, live rock, gravel, etc. all avail from other tanks, but if I put them in the quarantine tank, I expect the formalin will kill the beneficial bacteria.

Should I run carbon for a couple of days (how long?) to remove the formalin completely before adding biological media? Or should I be continuing the formalin treatment??

Thanks!
