I am setting up a 150 gallon reef. And I have about 430 lbs. of rock to work with. my tank is only 48" wide though not your standard 72" wide. So my backdrop will be almost 30" tall. was just curious if any of you had ideas on placement or if i should try to build like ledges and stuff that overhang towards the front of the tank. I have many different shapes of rock to work with. Figi, Tonga, Carribean, etc. some are large and flat, plate like pieces others are massive base piecs with lots of cavernous openings. Should I make like two islands or one big wall with caves, or kinda like make it a half moon shape wrapping on the sides and leaving the center open? I'm a little stumped at the moment cause i know the possibilites are endless but was just curiuos as what type of layout was appealing to others? Thanks for the imput........

I am in the process of planning my set up for my 120 gallon tank. What is the most appealing to me has to be rock pillars. After following a few threads on RC, I am going to use acrylic rod for the pillars with some acrylic cubes attached to bottom rock to facilitate nice cave work in the sand. I think it looks amazing, I also plan on having one island with a bridge to a pillar.

Rob,

I like caves, ledges, and islands too.

All your ideas sound good. Try one. If you don't like it, you can rearrange it to your hearts content. Not to get technical... but the only layout that matters is the one YOU like.

I suggest looking at other reefers build threads to find what you like and go from there. :)

....new to the sport, so pardon my STUPID questions, but....during the setup process, were do you keep all of the rock? And is it all new to you? ( the rock) ? I have started a 60 gl hex, and am loving it!!! I have 10,000 questions. PS, your set up does look pimp! :)
