I like my spears true union ball valves. Reasonably priced (not the cheapest or most expensive).

Do they turn easily and are they unions as well?

I've use the true union valves from Savko Plastics. Never had a problem turning a valve or one leaking past.

Yes, to both. I have these 1.5" ID beasts that work so smoothly....

One thing to remember, the minute any ball valve isn't open all the way, you now have part of the outside of the "ball" exposed to water. Scale will form, and eventually can hinder proper use of the valve, regardless of brand.

I use Hayward sch80 bulk heads.
I use the ball valves from Lowe's (believe they are American Valve). Ball valves are cheap enough they can be replaced it ever needed. Bulkheads are a little more critical to the tank well-being.

IMO Spears are the best. Hayward and Asahi are also very good.

Yea, but you should always cycle the valves at a regular intervals. Keeps the seat from deforming and scrapes and kind of deposit off the ball. Most problems with ball valves are because of this.

I like Hayward. You can buy rebuild kits for 12 bucks.
