For a saltwater reef it says just to use the sponge. Can't I use the carbon too? I know the ceramic media and bioballs will eventually lead to nitrates.
Also should I put some live rock rubble in one of the chambers? Will the live rock I put in the display be sufficient enough for biological filtration?

I would personally not keep the sponge either. Just run Carbon and live rock rubble. And the rest of the filtration should be sufficient by live rock.

anyone know of a skimmer other than the fission nano skimmer they recommend that would fit in one of the chambers?
Also does the fission fit in one of the chambers?

I wouldnt even bother tring the fission. It has the collection cup the size of the quarter.

You can try to find one of the Sapphire skimmers for the nanocube 12. I put one in my AP12 and it works fine. I had to lower the water level in the back chambers to keep it from overflowing though.
FWIW, if you do weekly water changes then you can go w/out a skimmer. i do a 10% water change every week, feed less and my nutrient stay at a minimal. my AP12 have been up for 4 months and is going strong.
my chambers are set up as such:
chamber 1
Live rock rubble with filter floss at the top. I change out the filter floss once a week.
Chamber 2
Chiller outlet pump
Chamber 3
ATO inlet/Chemi-Pure Elite
Chamber 4
MJ900/Heater/Chiller Inlet

I would ditch the blue sponge and use filter floss. Also, don't bother with the fission nano skimmer. They work best in the garbage- speaking from personal experience.

I have Chemi-pure and filter floss in chamber 1, chaeto in 2 and heater and MaxiJet 900 in 3. 12 Gallon Nano Cube.
I agree with the above posters. lose the sponge save the carbon thats it.
My 12g aquapod
1st chamber filterfloss abov lr rubble sometimes chemi pure
2nd cheato
3rd more rock rubble
4th heater and MJ900
running for over 2 years now
