I have my gallon jug and my mg flakes. Now I need to make my batch of MG. Can someone direct me to the recipe link or tell me what I need to do? Thanks

Is this for use with the DIY 2-part or just as a general magnesium supplement?

If it is a stand alone, the recipe is different:

This is for the Mg flakes I bought from Buckeye Field Supply.

Are you using my two part also from their materials, or some other way of supplementing calcium and alkalinity?

The answer determines the recipe for you to use. :)

"Are you using my two part also from their materials"

Randy I am not following you. If I am answering correctly I am just using the Mg flakes for Mg supplementation.

Yes, but what are you using for calcium and alkalinity. It makes a difference as to what to us for magnesium. :)

Is it safe to assume the difference between the two is to keep your chloride from getting too high if your using the two part receipe?

Yes. If you are using my DIY two part, you use a lot less mag chloride (relative to mag sulfate) than if you are using just about anything else to supply calcium and alkalinity.

Then use MAg flake alone, or slightly better, the 10:1 recipe given in this article:

Do-It-Yourself Magnesium Supplements for the Reef Aquarium
http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-07/rhf/index.php

from it:

A certain mixture of magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate has no net effect on seawater's major anions (chloride and sulfate). All that is necessary for such a recipe is to add these two ingredients in such a ratio that they add chloride and sulfate in the ratio naturally present in seawater (which is 7.1 to 1 on a weight basis and 9.6 to 1 on a per ion basis).

To perfect such a recipe, it's imperative to know the amounts of sulfate in Epsom salts (39%), the amount of chloride in magnesium chloride hexahydrate (34.9%), and their bulk densities, because most aquarists will use a volume based measurement (1.05 g/cm3 for Epsom salts and 0.85 g/cm3 for magnesium chloride hexahydrate solids). Taking all these factors into account, the desired volume ratio is 10:1, MAG flake to Epsom salts, as a supplement; for instance, 10 cups MAG flake and 1 cup Epsom salts.
