HAving a bit of an algae break out and I have been using RO water from a wine store but it is not DI, wondering if this is not a
good idea...been using it for years but now my setup is just the
way it should be sump/fuge/cheato/phosban etc. and still having
problems. Any advice would be great

Cheers,
Brian

RO will get rid of most of the impurities in the water and give between 20-50 TDS IME with RO units. But with DI you will have 0 TDS

Who knows when they changed there RO membrane last? You should get your own RO/DI unit.

if youre going to invest the thousands of dollars into the reef hobby you may as well throw out the $150 for an RODI unit. If youre on your game like you say (doing water changes often, etc) then it could very well be the water.

Are you using bioballs or a DSB? How often do you change your water?

QFT. I'm guilty myself, & looking for a unit. You should too. :)

Ya, I here you...I've been renovating and live in a small cottage
with no basement so I'll have to rearrange things for a holding
tank. I agree 100%. Will look into a filter...was just curious as
to what I was missing/gaining by not having the additional DI.

Oh and longchamp I have a skimmer/return/ refugium
and a few inches of crushed coral in the fuge..with some LR
in the return section. Cheato is doing well and a NW 150 that
seems to be working out really well. HA is only on the back glass
but want to remedy this before it becomes a bigger issue.
Thought it could be my water which sounds like that should be
my frist remedy. Tanks for replies guys/girls.

RO/DI is definitely better, but I have a 3 stage GE unit under my kitchen sink that is RO only and works great. Definitely better than the crappy carbon-only tapwater filter I started with. It really depends on what the quality of the incoming source water is. Some needs more "work" than others.

your ro will do about 95% and the di will take care of the rest to get it down to 0ppm. i dont know how crucial it is, but its not much more if you are already buying the unit, so i went ahead and got it. i got the dual di unit, and that way i can rotate the second cartridge into the first spot when the unit wears out, and so on.
