vigorous flow in the display and adequate numbers of snails and detrivores is the best way to prevent it from settling and accumulating.

Flow I have is shifting my sanded already but there are some dead zones, such as underneath the power head... Any suggestions on snails? I have a couple of Mexican Turbos.

Clean up crew thats their Job. Fish first then Diamond goby on bottom then hermits then snails better flow keeps food suspended longer so fish have longer time to pick off I never shut down flow to feed, my fish eat on the run and chase it around the tank I never understood the turn off the pumps to feed route. the Ocean always is in motion except on rare days.

brittle stars(the brown ones) are excellent as are cleaner shrimps and coral banded shrimp

once a week you should take a turkey baster to the substrate and live rock--lightly baste all that detrius back up into the water column where it can be filtered off

One Koralia #3 and one #1

a 45 gal tank should have a flow rate of between 900 and 1800 gph
You are sitting with 1000 gph--on the low end but you could add another ph--its only going to enhance the filter process.
Along with turkey basting the rock and substrate once a week you will really be able to cleanup nitrates, phosphates and other organics in your display tank

Great! I have another #1 around, I will add it as soon as I get home.

Thanks.
