Is it true that sun corals do not need the high intensity light that other corals need? If so, that sounds like great news to me because after looking at so many different members tanks over the years, I have always had a soft spot for the various sun corals I've seen in people's tanks. I just didn't realize they were non-photosynthetic. I assumed they needed the high light along with target feedings, because I always saw them in members tanks that had placed them among the light-loving corals. Anyhow, my lighting is not strong enough to support all the light loving corals, so hearing about the sun corals is great. I would really like to try keeping them!

My water quality is great and target feeding 3-5 times a week is not bothersome to me.:D :D

You can have them in a well lit tank you just have to keep them out of direct exposure like in a dark spot or under an overhang etc.

Yes, in the wild they can grow in caves, so technically they don't need much. You do need to make sure you feed each head either daily or every other day. So as long as you're willing to put in the time, you could be successful.

That's not true entirely. You don't need to feed them everyday. I've had a sun coral for over a year now and I feed them when they come out. I have my lighting scheduled to turn off around 9pm so I can usually see them out before I go to bed. If they are out, I feed them. If they aren't out, I don't. I've gone 2-3 weeks at a time without feeding them and they are very very healthy. I know a lady that never target fed hers and it's gorgeous. Just me 2 cents. Check out my pics and you'll see mine.

yea agreed with dante7921, i dont feed them every day, maybe every 2-3 days when i remember,

i have mine under 150W and they open up, and its not in any kind of shade lol, but typically they dont need high intense lighting, just feeding

Awesome! I'm surprised more people don't keep them than. They are so gorgeous and unique.

What do you use as food to feed them?

They'll take a variety of foods, but I've found that mine do best with chopped mysis shrimp. I generally target feed mine that twice a week but I also put some phyto/cyclopeeze mix in at another time and I think they may take some of the cyclopeeze. They certainly open up wide whenever I put that in.

How do you feed all the heads that are in back? I must have over 30 heads with tiny ones forming in between. I can't get to the ones in back. I finally turned it and noticed recession.

i feed the tank first, so the sun coral know its feeding time, after about 10 min when the sun coral is opened up, i take a container with 3 cups of tank water, and put the sun coral in that container. i then feed each head at least once, some head eat 2 -3 times LOL, and after about 20 mins i put the sun back into the tank and the fish/shrimps/hermit will eat the left overs

i know its odd taking the coral in and out of the tank but it works for me, and i get a chance to feed each head,

also i have to worry about overfeeding my tank this way,

u might want to try the soda bottle way if u dont want to do it my way, that way the food gets traped in the soda bottle and therefore a higher chance of feeding the back if u just put some food around the coral
