I was wondering if anyone has ever used cheap bulk carbon from ebay. I don't really know if there is a lot of diiference in carbon or not. Here is a link for example http://cgi.ebay.com/Five-Gallons-Aquarium-Activated-Lignite-Carbon-Small_W0QQitemZ360040692817QQihZ023QQcategoryZ46310QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I'm sure I will be told it is no good, but thought I would ask anyways.

Will the small size be ok in a mesh bag?

It depends on the mesh bag micron rating. I now use thier large size carbon and it is small also but it works in most mesh bags.
