i will be trying to cool my tank with fans this summer.should i have the fan on the 125g tank upstairs or on the 200 g sump in the basement? or both? would like to run only 1 if i can.

If you are using metal halide lights (I assume you are if you need to cool your tank) than I would have the fan on the tank blowing across the top of the water. I would imagine that most of the heat in the sump would dissapate into the tubing and surroundings while it moves around, but the tanks temp will probably still be up.

I'm also in the chicago area. I had a friends tank in my basement for a few months. he was moving into an apartment until his new house was done. We had to keep a heater in the tank. The temp in the basement was 70 deg & this was in the summer. I would just wait & see what the temps get to & go from there.

I guess I'm saying is if the sump is around 72 deg & the DT gets to 80 or so. The water mix might just even out in the 78 /80 range

actually im not using lights right now only sunlight.but it seems to be best to try and blow fan on tank thanks
