long but not too tall. I have a piece of shelf rock that's just 3" under the top of the water. Obviously this spot has very high lighting and also has very high flow.

corals I'm interested in for this spot are:

Encrusting Monitpora

Scrolling Monitpora

Tabling Acropora

Would any of these be ok? Please feel free to suggest any other corals that would be suitable. For lighting I'm using Solaris 20k 250w equivalent. This coral would be approx 6-8 inches below the light.

Thanks.:D

the problem with any of these other than an encrusting montipora is that as they grow, they will shield the light from anything directly under them

Luckily the rock is pretty long and wide, and depending on where I place the light on top of the tank the area below is usually shaded anyway, which is where I was going to put low light softies.

IMO encrusting monti's look best when on a vertical rock or lower in tank so you can see it the cap may block but might not be a big deal if the corals below don't need alot of light my choice would be tabling acro a tricolor so you can see nice colors from side as well as top.

Thanks, I like the tabling acros a lot. How tall do they get and if I needed to do a big WC would it be ok exposed to air for a few minutes or would it be best to move him lower until the water level is back up?

Would you consider something like this? This is called Surf N' Turf - and I have always seen that it grows out, not up. Just a thought.
