Was given to my fiance by a local source. Any ideas? It appears to be a frogfish. I'm wondering what a frogfish that small should be fed. It's about 2" long.

Yes a frog. I'd start with ghost shrimp and gradually train him to mysis.

Any idea on what kind of frog?
ghost shrimp are small enough? Where's the quickest place to get them from?
Thanks

its a juvenile sargassum angler (histrio histrio), a frogfish, one of the few lureless anglers.
They come in every year in droves attached to free floating sargassum that migrates to the gulf every spring
Anyway, these guys get pretty good size and grow quickly. They are extremely aggressive feeders, and if you haven't noticed yet it will attempt to eat pretty much every tankmate including similar sized sargassum anglers

Wow, thanks. What do you mean by "good" sized? Are there any other specific care requirements that we should know about?
Thanks

Good sized would be something along the lines of a football ;) Diet is fish and shrimp, anything they can swallow which is anything up to their own size, or even longer :eek1:

Yes it is a sargassum angler, I seen one eat a wrasse bigger then the angler itself in a lfs. Make sure you are careful with tank mates for the guy because he will try to eat them if they are within eating size.

My fiance has fallen in love so it will be a single fish tank. It has anemones and a sea urchin as tank mates. And other than some Ricordia, she's pretty satisfied with the tank.
As for the tank cleaners, are they in danger too? I've heard that some frogfish each crustaceans too but wasn't sure if the sargassum was one of those.

As far as I know an angler won't mess with snails or little hermit crabs, I could be wrong on this but I just cant see them naturally eating these guys. As far as shrimp, I can see them being devoured by an angler, possibly even other crabs. I'd wait to get a confirmation on this from someone who have kept these in a tank with crustacean because I haven't had one with them. Great looking fish btw, they're truly amazing animals.

Glad to hear it will be kept by itself, that's the best way ;) Snails and hermits should be safe, shrimp will be dinner.

Histrio histrio. Sargussum angler. Kind of deceiving as it lacks an esca.

Dont overfeed it, they are voracious and will eat till they pop (figuratively speaking of course), but its unhealthy and im certain thats what led to the death of the one i had.

Sargassums get football sized? I guess I learn something everyday
