Are Fridmani smart enough to not get eaten by a medium size carpet?
I only have 2 oscellaras and a medium blue carpet in my 40g breeder and I am on the waiting list at LA for 2 Fridmani.
Stay on list or cancel?

Is it a Haddoni carpet?

Is so I wouldn't count on the fish being smart enough or dumb enough. It is just a came of chance, and how much risk you are willing to take.

I have two Haddonis, one for 7+ years the other for a year, over all that time I have only lost 2 fish to them, others haven't been as lucky. With this being in a 40, this is less room, so a greater chance that they might get eaten.

I'm pretty sure it's a Haddoni, it doesn't have the long tentacles like a gigantea.
Are there other types of carpets besides these two?

It's dark now , so no pic, but it has a white oral disk with 1/8-1/4 in. tentacles thinning out as they get closer to the disk.

There is also a Stichodactyla mertensii. Is it on the sandbed? But sounds like a haddoni.

Does it look like this,

Yep, but not as big.
It's in the rock now.
Only had it for a few days. I'm BB. Does it need a sand bed?

Yea, they really prefer to have their foot in the sand right at the sand/rock interface. I don't see your being happy if there is no sand. Could always try a tupperware full of sand if you want to stay BB.

You can see its foot going under the rock here,

And this it from underneath the tank, foot attached to the bottom glass.

OK Thanks.
I was actually thing about putting some sand in here for a change. 120g has been BB for years.
Would a couple of inches be enough?

Toddrtrex

Yea, I think I have 2 inches 3 at the most.

Sand is better anyways. ;) ;) ;)

he he he.

Truth be told, I am not a mod, just a "team RC" member -- in between
regular members and mods, here to give extra help to the members, plus other things.

I am still not going to get into THAT discussion.
Don't want to end up like my inspiration Bomber.

Touche. ;)

There are only two reasons I use sand, looks and for my anemones. There are so many ways to run a tank, and what might work for me, might not work for you. As long as you are happy with your tank, and your fish/inverts are happy, that is all that matters.

Heck I still gravel vac my sandbed with each water change.

As I said, I had been thinking about sand for this tank, now I have a good excuse.

Vacuuming a sand bed was one reason I went BB on the 120.
I have had a lot of success with bb on the 120.
It should be fairly easy on a 40.

Think with a breeder it would be pretty easy to do, and your anemone will thank you for it.

I think part of the reason I don't mind doing it, is because I started with fresh water, and got used vacuuming the rocks. Old habit die hard. :)

It looks like you have crushed shell on top and finer sand on the bottom. Correct?
I was thinking of just picking up a bag or 2 of aragonite unless you can recommend something cheaper.
As I said I have stayed out of the sand/bb threads, so I don't know if there is something else being used now.

This is what I am using on all of my tanks. Think it works great if you are just using shallow sandbed.

Just ordered it from DFS.
I wanted to get some locally, but I haven't seen that in my LFSs

Thanks again.

Glad to help. :)

I was able to find some at an LFS, but also ordered some from DFS too.

Now all I have to do is figure out if I want to take a chance on the Fridmani.
They would probably like the sand better also.

I did find an old reference that said that psuedochromis have better luck with haddoni than others.

Interesting. The only two fish that I lost was a Mandarin and a yellow watch man goby.

While I have never kept a psuedochromis, did have a royal gramma, which is similar, and it stayed out of the way. Though my Clarkiis and pink skunks ( different tanks, but both with Haddonis ) don't let others get all that close.
