View Full Version : Kalk dosing pump problem

Hi everyone, I want to say I'm quite the lurker in the chemistry forum here, and Randy's articles have showed me quite a bit in regards to dosing limewater and I thank you.

Now on to the problem. I have a food grade dosing pump and it works wonderfully, except the limewater keeps eating through the latex (I'm guessing) tubing that goes around the pump wheel. Every two weeks I have to replace the line and this is getting expensive.
Can I get some suggestions as to what I can replace that latex tube with, silicone perhaps ?
Thanks in advance
Heres a pic of the pump.

IMO silicone tube is ok if you find same size / elasticity

If you go to a site like Cole-Parmer, or perhaps some hobbyist sites, there are tubing supplies for peristaltic pumps, and they list compatibility. I keep forgetting which ones are limewater-safe, but the web sites are easy enough to decode.

This page will help choose a tubing:

So silicone does appear to be very good.

I use a different brand of pump but the tubing I use is made from norprene and lasts much longer than the silicone. Silicone only lasts for a few months on mine. Replaced it with the norprene and it's been about a year now.

Thank you all!
bertoni, I'll check that site and see what looks like it will work best. Just from my common knowledge, I was thinking silicone, but I'll look in to norprene as well.

It took a bit of looking but, I have a couple feet of both silicone and norprene tubing coming my way. Good ole US Plastics saves the day again. :)

Sounds good!

you can also check on cole-parmer, fisher scientific etc., VWR websites, or your local hardware store for tubing that is resistant to bases.

good luck!

I need tubing for a masterflex 7021-26 for dosing calcium hydroxide. I don't know how to tell what size I.D. and O.D. I need. If anyone has any recomendations please let me know.
