ok its been a while since ive posted on rc due to the fact that about 6 years ago i began keeping octopus and have been consequently posting on tonmo.com constantly. i thought this would be worthy of posting here though.
ive been missing my reef tank so i decided to put one together. i didnt want a huge one and so i started looking at what i had lying around. for years ive had an old gumball machine top that had a 6 inch hole in the top and bottom. so i decided id make a nano tank out of it.
i took a peice of 3/8 glass 12x12 and drilled 2 holes next to each other in it. then siliconed it to the hole on the bottom of the globe. then i placed in the bulkheads and stand pipes for the return and overflow. then i had to come up with an idea of how the stand would look. since the tank was so unique i thought id make the stand that way also. not only that im about to move and i needed an endtable for my sofa. the stand is 32x32x30. the tank pedestal is raised up so that i can fill the top of the table with shells from the beach and put a peice of glass over them.
for the plumbing i have a 20 gallon tank for a liverock box/refugium underneath that flows down into a 10 gallon which will house the skimmer and return pump.
for lighting the tank ive been looking into a company out of canada that produces 200 lumen LEDs in blue 460nm and white 10k. im probably going to get 3 or 4 of each color and put them together in a pendant formation and retro fit them into a table lamp that will hang it over the tank.
the aquascaping is going to be the tough part due to the fact that the opening is only 6 inches. im going to take live rock and drill holes to fit over the stand pipes and just stack them in a column formation and wedge peices sticking out for small ledges where possible.
anyway heres the pics from the test run and anyone got any more suggestions?
btw the globe is about 20 gallons suprisingly which will make the total system around 45 or so.
