I'm going to purchase one of these two skimmers to work on about 40 gallons of mixed reef. I think the 9002 would be just fine, but would the 9005 be more appropriate?

My primary concern is the noise level. I have heard that the 9002 is extremely quiet, but I haven't heard as much about the 9005. Anyone have any insight comparing the two in terms of noise?

I have the 9005 on my 75. I dont hear it running at all. I have to take the cup out to make sure it is working :-)

I have a 9005 on my 37g and it is quite quiet. I had the 9002 for a year or so and it was more quiet, but not as effective as it is a passive skimmer and relies on the diffusion of water into the skimmer body. The 9005 circulates much more water and the amount can be regulated via a sliding door which restricts the intake and makes it more plankton-friendly. I have mine wide open for maximum particulate removal and oxygenation. I also dose small amounts of ozone through the supplied ozone nipple which the 9002 doesn't have. The 9002 is an effective little skimmer, but I think the 9005 would better suit your needs.

Interesting - can you describe in any way how much the 9002 was more quiet than the 9005? That may be difficult, but it would be a big help :)

I could barely hear the 9002. I can hear the 9005, but it is by no means loud. The slight noise is worth the significant increase in power.

Thanks for the response. Making my decision a tough one.

The only reason I'm being so picky is because the aquarium will probably sit near the TV.
