no because the bulb life will be severely shortened.

you should run a fan across the bulbs while they are running as well.

does it really get that hot? it seems that they would have me believe the convection cooling vents are adequate.

I use one on mine due to the splashing up from my overflow. I just went to lowes and had them cut a piece of plexi to fit in there, its alot cheaper then buying the stock shield.
The heat isnt bad if ya ask me.
