View Full Version : Big lta

My lta has lost a few tentacles, he seems fine he's roaming, i just put him in earlier today. He's like 10 to 12 inches. But it seems his tentacles shrivel up and turn green and look crappy, just a couple, every thing else is expanded. i can see where 2 or 3 came of and it looks like its twisted shut at the end. whats happening?

probably accumiliating

Your LTA is roaming? That isn't good. They like a deep sand bed of fine sand/aragonite. You can fill a 6 inch diameter PVC pipe with fine sand and hopefully it will settle in there. It's not unusual for the tentacles to shrivel at times. Could you post more information, such as parameters, pics and lighting?

Hi Jason, Is this the same anemone that wouldn't attach or is this a new one?

04/21/2008, 01:03 PM
this is a new one, a gaint. No rips in his skin or nothing. now why would he lose a couple tentacles from aclimation?

04/21/2008, 01:35 PM
and on another note, if lta's require strong lights, why do mine always crawl under a ledge and into the rocks, i use the same lighting as the lfs does.

04/21/2008, 03:41 PM
I know they say that these anemones require strong lights. My purple LTA is under 2x65w Current USA PowerCompact Orbit Fixture. My purple LTA does great under pc lights.

so noone knows why tentacles could fall off lta's? Am i really the only one this has happend to? One guys says its acclimating to its evironment. Is this true? Why would it shed tentacles to acclimate itself?

04/22/2008, 11:58 AM
I don't know ..mine doesn't do that. Maybe some thing in your tank is picking at it? What other inverts do you have?

Btw, where did you buy this one from?
Can you take a picture?

04/22/2008, 12:54 PM
in the second pic you can see a lil more, he's pulled in a lil tight.
the third pic is a tentacle on the sand. Clowns are 2 inches for a size relation.

About the inverts, i have a cleaner shrimp that has lived on a carpet nem, 2 bta's and a sabea and he has never hurt them, he almost got ate by the carpet but he never left it. 10 blue leg hermits and several hitch hiking snails, i do have a large population of bristle worms, would they hurt a nem?

Oh, I have read in some other threads that.. some times maroon clowns will bite off tentacles of their host anemone. That maybe what is happening..Did you see the tentacles fall off?

If your anemone is still eating, attached, and its mouth is tightly shut I wouldn't worry about it too much. When I first added my purple LTA there were a few times durring the day where a few of its tetacles would deflate. I was worried about it and was told by a few LTA owners that this is normal. The only thing that is bad is when all of its tentacles deflate. Water changes are important, and carbon since you have other anemones in the same tank. I think carbon and 10% water changes every week is what keeps my lta looking its best.

no the other anemone's are gone. Death to most but the carpet was awesome, it was a green. unfortunatly in my 29g he was a gill net waiting for a meal so i sold him. i've seen the maroons nip at the lta but not hard the tentacles didn't even react when i was watching. Never know though. do you have a pic of ur lta?

Do you mean the ones just to the left of the clown? Those are the vunclues ( or however you spell it, little bumps that are on the underside of the oral discs on LTAs. )

04/24/2008, 04:58 PM
yeah thats what i thought, it looks real pretty.

04/24/2008, 06:29 PM
thank you :) How is your LTA doing now?

04/25/2008, 11:40 PM
i'm not sure about mine right now, i came home from work tonight and my nudibranch was dead stuck on a power head and my anemone looked like crap, I'm hoping that the toxins from the nudi didn't affect it, every thing elso looks fine, i'm hoping my nem is just doing he's doing his little water change out. He is still sticky though so thats good right, he took a feeding for the first time but he isn't footed. I hope he's ok. what do yall think?

04/26/2008, 07:51 AM
Did you do a waterchange? If not I would do at least a 15% or 20% water change. LTAs don't change their water like btas do. At least thats what I've observed with mine. IF its deflated thats not a good thing. Do a good water a water change and put in fresh carbon.

alright, well i can make it to the store tomarrow afternoon to get water, but something is wrong. Over night somebody(most likely other maroon) ripped the tail off my male maroon and it died today. And my anemone is still looking shotty. The only thing i can guess at this point is maybe the temp change between night and day,(4 to 5 degrees) could be killing them. Its so fraustrating, i promise if this dies i'm over w/ them for atleast a year. I hate killing creatures off like this. Honestly my tank has just turned into a deathrow for them. Any way i'm just ranting now. I'll just do my w/c tomarrow and see what happens.
thanx for the help wicked, i apreciate it.

its dead :(

04/28/2008, 07:11 AM
What? are you sure? What happened?:(

04/28/2008, 03:22 PM
Well i woke up and all the tentacles were shriveled to the sides and it was like a golfball in the middle(looked like a stringy golf ball). And once again the foot was torn(not from me, i didn't touch him) He was a little sticky still but i didn't want him to comprimise my tank any more than the nudi and the dead maroon had done already. I got my money back for the clown and the nem and then hit a lick on a piece of coral. They had sometype of green umbrella that they said was extremely rare and just now coming around in the busness. Its a type of green umbrella that they said their boss didn't id it right and so they were only selling it for 20 bucks. I seen a frag of one at a diff lfs for 80 bucks that was literally a quarter the size. So really i guess i got what i wanted, rarity. Its an umbrella w/ extremely neon green feeders. Looks beautiful, would take a pic but its closed right now. Thanx for the help wicked. keep in touch.
