Ok so I'm about to order a stand and canopy for my 125 from glasscages.com. I need to have my tank drilled for the dual corneroverflows I want. I need to know how thick the return and drain lines have to be. I'm planning to eventually have a reef set-up so I'll want the flow. I also was wondering what the difference between schedule 40 and 80 is?

I think they can be as think as I want provided the return pumps are matched, I just want to verify this.

btw I asked my LFS and was told that a single 1" line would be enough.

Thanks guys

How much flow did you want to run through the sump? I would target about 400-500 gph, but some people like to run much higher.

This calculator will help once you've picked the flow:

Recommended minimum drain pipe diameter = 0.92 inches
Recommended minimum linear overflow size = 8 inches

thats what it said there for 500 GPH. I would prefer to get dual overflows so would I do 2 3/4" drains? and is the linear overflow size the suggested length of the overflow box on all 3 sides?

You can do 2 1inch hole for overflow.

cool and is there a difference between the schedule 40 and 80 bulkheads?

The overflow length is all the sides that have teeth. I'd just do two 1" bulkheads, but two 3/4" lines should be fine.

I've forgotten the difference between the two schedules, but one is likely a lot stronger than the other. I'd look at the price difference in pipes, etc.

i thought they were just the bulkheads and that they shared piping. I'll look into it, thanks a lot. I ended up ordering my standand canopy from a store on ebay that someone else on here did. cheaper and faster shipping than glass cages, I just have to build it.

You got me curious. From what I can see, schedule 40 has thinner walls than schedule 80, so it won't be as strong. I don't know that it matters in our setups. The bulkheads might be cross-compatible for some sizes. I just don't know.

I'll be going with dual 3/4 schedule 80. I like knowing that the pipe and fittings are stronger than they need be for just a few $$$ more.

My plans for the sump are this: skimmer area ->return->refuge. I'm going to have a drain line coming from either side of the tank and draining in the skimmer area and in the refuge. To lower the flow throught the refuge I'm putting a T tap with a valve to adjust how much water goes to the refuge.

I would go 1 inch all around. The boxes may tell you a certain flow but 3/4 pipe limits the flow.

ok, like i said i can always lower the flow where I have to

That sounds like a fine setup to me. Good luck!

Thanks I'll probably add my own build up thread when I get the stand in, should be in first week of may
