Canister filter question.

I have an Ehiem canister filter, the guy I got from said that I don't need to really do anything to it, except for about every 3 months rinse the sponges in tank water. What up with this? Does anyone have any other advice?

What else do you plan on using with it? For a fish only and
If your using the other ehiem substrates i would clean those as well every 2-3 mos in tank water, replace 1/3rd of the ephimech (SP) and change carbon as well. Ofcourse depending on the fish load and feedings you may have to adjust to your needs.
If you just want it for po4 and carbon on a reef tank or fowler i would clean it and replace gac,gfo, and rinse off sponges every 3-4 weeks at the most. I cleaned mine up every 2 weeks to keep it from being nitrate factory.

I have a 65g reef with a few small fish. Should I rinse everything? and how often?

when i ran one it would need cleaning about every 3-4 weeks and it would be pretty dirty. I would also clean up the inside, pumps and hoses as well at least every 2-3 months
