View Full Version : MCE600 Skimmer goes wild with Water Changes

I use reef crystals that I mix with DI water and let mix with a powerhead
for a week I also have an airstone to aerate the new saltwater.
I use this to do a 5% water change weekly but when I do the skimmer goes wild.
I normally run the air valve wide open to minimize the bubbles in
the tank, but I have to dial the air way back after a water change
which beans lots of bubbles in the tank till It skims out the
newness in the water.
Any ideas on how to cure this?
Thank you.

just open the airvalve all the way and raise the cup as high as it will go, and wait.

Doing that just makes the cup overflow
What I have to do is turn the air way down and pull the
cup all the way up, but that just throws tons of bubbles.
Then after the newness skimms out I can lower it, but it takes a day to skimm out.

hmm pure water goes into the cup when it is raised as high as it can go and the air tap is open or off?
my skimmer never does that.

If the tap is all the way open it overflows
If it is set to not overflow (2-3 o'clock) it throws tons of bubbles
If it is all the way closed it does nothing (no skimming at all)
About the only solution is to not do water changes.
I go through this weekly with every water change

the tap open in my skimmer is the lowest water level when you go 2-3 oclock the pump pulls more water and the water level in the skimmer rises
can you take a picture next time it happens?

No need for a pic we all know what an overflowing cup looks like
I think the only real cure is to stick this in a sump (or stop doing water changes)
I had a friend who had one and he had the same problems, the solution was to stick it in a sump.

I don't know if this is a coincidence or not but I just spoke to a customer that was using Reef Crystals and never had a problem until the last bucket he bought...... It caused the skimmer to overflow.... He tried this a few times with the same resulst and switched salt and did not have a problem after that.

I too use Reef Crystal (add cal and mag)
My 600 had same problems  , just after water change..
I just raised cup.. it quickly goes away.. Just turn skimmer off for @ 1 hr..
Does make you wonder whats in the salt! (Mr Bubble?)

Any suggestions for a different salt?
With the problems with Reef Crystals I may as well change.
