I don't think I want to keep a DSB because of all that seems to be entailed. So would a sand bed of 1"-2" be suffecient? I plan to use eggcrate on the bottom for support also.

Thanks,

I have a 46g bow front (reef) and my sand bed is about 3". I have not had any problems with it. Good Luck!

Everything that can go wrong with a DSB, can go wrong with a BB. It's always your call. Husbandry perhaps...

FWIW.

Would 1"-2" be sufficient for what? No, it will not be the same as a DSB if thats what you're asking. It will really only be aesthetic and support a bit of fauna perhaps, but not bacteria to consume nitrates.

Nothing wrong with it at all. Just depends on how you want to take care of your tank. :)

A 1-2" sand bed is fine. I'm going on six months with mine.

When it gets dirty I just blow the detritus back into the water column and skim it out. You can't do that with a DSB.

That said, it doesn't really -do- anything for you other than aesthetic appeal. But that's good enough for me.
