View Full Version : 160 gallon peninsula reef build

I figured that it has been a while since someone has posted a "build thread" so I figured I would share mine as I go. I was hoping that the next build I would do would be a "big" tank but do to a few reasons I just traded my 375 for Pacific Reef's 160g peninsula.
Tanks measurements are: 84x18x24
Plans for this tank are:
use the sump and ref that came with it.
Skimmer-Aqua C EV 400 hybrid (23" tall!)
Main pump- Dart
Closed loop- Super dart w/ oceans motions 4 way (ver. 2)
returns from CL will be coming up from bottom through rock
work. Rock work will be three tall islands w/ center being
largest.
Lighting- 8x 54w t5's overdriven on icecaps
I am sure there is some things I am forgetting to mention but they will get thrown in along the way. When we go the tank it was black, oak underneath. We decided to strip the black, and the whitewash underneath that, and are going to re-stain it.
Here are some pics of progress so far.

Nice work on the stand. Can't wait to see it setup as a peninsula. Are you going to build a rock rack for the aquascaping?

Thanks everyone. I actually just finished with first coat of polyurethane about 5 min ago. The stocking plans are not too crazy. I have a 125 right now, so everything from that is going to go in here. About 300 lbs live rock, purple tang, yellow tang, scotts fairy, magnificent foxface, two onyx, and a few other small fish. Mixed reef, softies, lps and sps. I want to actually drill the rock and "stack" it on my closed loop returns. I have seen it done with many tanks before. Some of them have awsome landscaping. Hope that answers everyone's questions. Now to place my order to Dr. F&S.

Nice to meet you too. It was a real pleasure to see your tanks. That skimmer is unreal! Well if I can't set it up I will put it in the yard and use it as a swimming pool.

James at the rate your going you'll have it set up in no time. Don't forget to order one of these

The tank and stand are in the house. The stand is totally done except drilling the hole for the closed loop. Will drill those tomarrow along with the tank. Here are some pics so far. Not to many, but should be a busy weekend! Can't wait to start plumbing. I really want to see water in it this weekend! :D

Hey Tangers,
Great tank build so far. Its unreal how you and I thought of almost the exact same thing. My build in progress is a 150g. peninsula. 60x24x24, ocean motion close loop with dolphin pumps for my return and close loop. My stand even looks like yours. Will tag along if you don't mind to see how you come along. Will get my build posted on here soon.

tangers
05/10/2008, 09:36 AM
Cudaruner- sounds good. I would have liked to hae 24 inces wide on mine, but you can't have your cake and eat it too, right? lol. Just lookin at your screen name, any chance you have a cuda? If so what year, and any pics. I love those cars.

Just finished the baffels and skimmer shelf in the sump. Now on to the closed loop.

Pacific Reefs
05/11/2008, 06:45 AM
Did you get water in it? You should post this thread in the large tank section as well.

tangers
05/11/2008, 07:04 AM
Nope, no water. I have the thing almost plumbed, but my pump came with a crack in the housing. Going to have to talk to reeflo about that one tomarrow. I would post in the large tank forum but it is supposed to be for 180 and up, and even though I have that total volume I think that that's kind of stretching it. After I get things cleaned up a bit today, I will post pics of progress so far.

cudaruner
05/11/2008, 10:20 PM
I wanted to go longer on my tank but location (apartment) limited that, but your right we can't have our cake and eat it too. I haven't made any water yet myself, starting to do pluming tomorrow. Still waiting for some plum pieces to come in the mail too. Oh, by the way, my very first car which I brought from the original owner back in 1977 and still have is a 1971 Cuda. Its in rag tag shape and needs a complete rebuild but I do still have it. I'm looking at hopefully having my tank up and running in about another month, still have to buy LR and mud for ref. But I will start making water for the system soon.

tangers
05/12/2008, 07:10 AM
Sounds good, just a quick note, I would make sure you do your leak test with regular water first. I would hate to see you waste a lot of ro water.

Well it's been a while since I have updated this thread and a couple of people were asking for pics so I figured I would post. Tank has been up and running now for 2 months. Most of the problems/hicups have been worked out/tweaked. Very happy with everything so far. Lost some corals due to middle column kept falling. Had to redo whole thing and epoxy and zip tie to closed loop to prevent future falls. Pics aren't that good-just messing around with new camera and figured I'd post what I got. Tank needs to be cleaned a little too!! :D

Figured I would post some pics of my new toy. I got this Friday and it has been on the system since Friday night. A little slow at first but she is starting to kick in real hard. First set of pics were taken last night, second set right now. notice the ring above the skimate in the pail in both pics... Lastly I used a ruler in the pail to measure, almost 4" in a 5 gallon bucket since late Friday night. I am impressed. This is by far the best line of skimmers I have ever seen, not owned, seen!

I am in the process of building a cabinet for the skimmer to sit in, but I put that on hold as I may be moving due to work so I may have to sell everything.

Hey, you guys fare OK in the storm? No flooding?

Our road is a disaster! Meg can barely get through the road with her civic. A couple of the days she hasn't been able to. If we get rain tomarrow or tonight she won't be able to again! The water just won't go away! Other than the road that really sucks and is annoying, all is well. We are sitting on some pretty high ground so it's going to have to be pretty bad to flood in the house. How about you??... especially with the pond/lake?

rdmpe
08/28/2008, 05:43 AM
At the height of the rain the pond was up a couple of feet but it drains right back down since there is a little creek or wetland area coming off it. We are much higher than the pond though so we didn't have any drainage problems.

The frags look like they are doing well. You ready for some zenia and/or anthelia?

Hey,

Lighting- 8x 54w t5's overdriven on icecaps

How do you like your light setup, is it providing you with enough for all the coral? If you don't mind me asking did you set all of that up yourself and was it a lot cheaper than going with a all in one setup?

Thanks

there you go- that's the exact set I picked up. Greg at reef geek is real nice and informative.
If I could go back I would do it differently, I would get either 10 or 12x 39w overdriven. I am not really happy with the way they are staggard in the canopy. They look incredible and you would never tell, that's just the anal side of me ( I want it to look nice and neat!)

tangers
09/12/2008, 10:43 AM
for some reason the link didn't connect. If you go there though look under t5 lighting, sunlight supply retro fit, and then 8x54 watt VERY high output, not just the high output ones.

Lowredranger
09/12/2008, 10:55 AM
Why not just go with 6 or 8 of the overdriven 60" 80w bulbs, it would keep the price down and the wattage up?

Just trying to look at pricing for a new system, I don't want to short myself but less money the better.

Was looking around and did not know if you had considered a Tunze wavebox and why if yes/no? Do you think it would work with the overflow on one side only?

Thanks for all of your insight

tangers
09/12/2008, 12:15 PM
never thought of that. Tank is 7 feet though. that would leave me 1 foot on each side without direct light, unless I stagger them again. A wavebox won't fit on the wall side of my tank. Yes I did consider one. The only real problem I have heard with people with penninsula's and wave boxes is that the teeth on the overflow need to be longer to allow for the wave to go up and down and not break up or have a dry paint in the drains.

Pacific Reefs
09/12/2008, 01:48 PM
I've heard that you want center overflows with a wavebox otherwise it sounds like a toilet flushing every few seconds.

Lowredranger
09/12/2008, 02:17 PM
I think i might be getting your build thread off topic but could you use the end overflow with slits at the top and in the middle somewhere to reduce the toilet sound?

or could you make a middle of the tank overflow within a rock pile to conceal most of it and still have the wave box on the side.

I will stop asking questions hear getting Tangers awesome build thread off topic.

Pacific Reefs
09/12/2008, 02:54 PM
It may work if you lower the durso pipe inside the overflow box.

tangers
09/12/2008, 03:39 PM
I actually don't have my drains on dursos. I was never able to tune them properly and if I was it would only last for a couple days then back to flushing. My drains sit below the top of the overflow box (approx 6") and have a gate valve on them below the tank. I close the gate valve just enough to basically create a siphon. No air bubbles, no toilet flushing, etc... You could possibly do that and maybe just lower the drains a little more than I have mine to ensure no flushing sound. I have seen wave boxes before but have no first hand experience.

Sweet Tank . on page 3 you have a picture of a green coral. Is it a hydnophora? I purchased a coral that looks exactly like that and am having trouble getting it to thrive, paid about $25 for it. It recently has started receeding. Interested in hearing what you have to say about this coral. Its in the thread where you posted "Got bored with the camera so here are some more!""....

Keep up the good work.

If you are talking about this one, yes it is a hydnophora. I actually have never had a problem with it or 2 other pieces I kept over the years. Very hardy coral, and actually can bee aggressive. One of the only stoney's I actually keep due to it's hardiness. I got rid of most of the rest of the stoneys but have never had an issue with keeping this one or any other form of hydnophora. Sorry, not mych help. Was it a fresh cut? What are the parameters on your tank?

Figured I would post some pics of my new toy. I got this Friday and it has been on the system since Friday night. A little slow at first but she is starting to kick in real hard. First set of pics were taken last night, second set right now. notice the ring above the skimate in the pail in both pics... Lastly I used a ruler in the pail to measure, almost 4" in a 5 gallon bucket since late Friday night. I am impressed. This is by far the best line of skimmers I have ever seen, not owned, seen!

that's what it is. Here is a pic of when I used to use a feeder stick instead of pvc. I found the pvc to be better than the feeder stick (a little more surface area). Copperband is doing great. Unfortunately this is my third one over a course o 3 yrs. I think this one is here to stay though. I told myself that I would only by one that was "established" after the last two. This one actually came from a show tank at my lfs. He eats anything I put in the tank but loves his PE mysis. A lot of people get them eating frozen mysis etc... by starting with live brine and then slowly mixing in frozen brine, mysis etc... Hope that helps, thank for the compliments.
