I am setting up a 55g reef and am wanting to put some kind of protection on the bottom of the tank for the glass so my LR does not scratch or break it. I was thinking maybe some type of PVC type pad but don't know. What have any of you done in this matter?

I use eggcrate for the bottom of my tank. You can find it at Lowes in the ceiling section where you buy ceiling tiles. Its used to go underneath lights that hang from your drop down ceiling. Its like 10 buys for a 4' x 2' piece.

Thanks for that info. Question, wouldn't eggcrate allow nitrate pockets to build under the sand since it isn't a solid piece? Or are you talking about a different form of eggcrate?

You could put in a faux sand bed, fsb. I used a 3 to 1 sand to epoxy mix and poured it in the bottom. (I got the epoxy at Lowe's - Famowood glaze coat) I think it gives it a little more character. Even when it's grown over w/ corraline it still has some texture and depth to it.

This is where I plan to buy mine. HDPE is the type needed I believe.
