I just purchased a frag of Oregon Blue Tort from my LFS today. This thing is so sweet. Anyone have any experience with this acropora?

"The Oregon Tortuosa is famous for its deep blue color . It has a very slow growth rate. Suprisingly enough this coral is also very hardy. For continued good health, it will require the addition of supplemental calcium, strontium, and other trace elements to the water. These aquacultured corals are fragmented from corals that have been raised in captivity for at least 3 or 4 generations. They are not fragmented from wild harvested corals; which makes them hardier than their wild counterparts. "

Can anyone post up some pictures of their own oregon blue in their tank? Thanks

It is a pretty slow grower at first but when it takes off it will grow in good spurts.

Mine is very small yet and I've had it for quite some time (1yr+) Mine seems to be blue w/ tan hues...I've heard of small frags doing this until they get big enough.

My frag has had zero polyp extension from the day I put it in my tank. It looks like a lot of them have little to no polyp extension, but it still worries me a bit since I haven't seen polyps at night either. Although, I do need to get my tank in better shape.

Here's mine. Jefe12234 mine didn't have any polyp extension during the day so I gave it just a tad less flow and it has way better extension now.

I noticed that with my cali. tort too.

Don't expect a lot of PE from these guys. They're pretty hardy so as long as your parameters are in line and it's got good color leave it alone. VERY SLOW grower, agonizingly slow but once it puts down a base it will pick up.

I purchased an ORA Blue tort from liveaquaria.com

Does anyone know if ORA sells the Cali Tort or the Oregon tort? It has some green hue to it...

I bought this as a frag of Oregon Blue Tort about 18 months ago, but I have my doubts, as the growth pattern is different

Regardless it's one of my favorite corals

So just to make sure I had some of the real thing, I bought a frag from MakoJ about 2 months ago.

As cutegecko3 stated they sell both. They call their cali tort a blue-green tort and that is probably what you have if it has some green in it. It's also about half the price of the oregon.

What are you guys doing for light with these guys. Compared to others Acro, do they like strong or medium. I have a frag that I bought a couple of months ago, the growth tips are real blue but the ther other parts are not so blue, not really green like the cali, not brown, just not deep purple.

mine is about a foot under 400w halides (been under evc10kSE and Ush14kSE)... they seem to like a little nutrient in the water which makes sense because they are "lagoonal" corals

Hey Kip,
Thanks for the heads up. Funny thing about wanting more nutrients is the fact that I am preparing for Zeo, which is just about opposite. Anyway, based on your foot away from 400w, I may move mine under direct light as my frag is what i consider my medium light sps zone. Which is not directly under the center of the Lumenarc, but just off to the side. The frag is about 12" from the water line, which is another 6" to the reflector.

On a separate note, I did start dosing K, and now have my levels up to NSW. I aslo started dosing Coral Vitalizer. The K levels have been at 380 for about a week, and PCV 1/2 dose started 6 days ago. Blues are getting better, but I think light is the other key.

So for placement for the OBT, High light and slow to moderate flow?

it will adapt to pretty much anything with moderation... but sometimes they look dull and not very blue and IME... its a lack of nutrients

IME the true Oregon Tort keeps it's bright blue in almost any conditions although it does grow a bit faster if I place it a little bit lower in the tank.
