How long should lights be on?

How long should I be keeping my light on it is a 48 in florescent bulb. The tank is almost done with its cycle. I have been keeping it on for 8 hours a day should I keep it on longer shorter?

Up to 12 hours is ok. Fish in the tropics normally get about an even number of daylight/dark hours.
You probably know this, but if you progress from a FOWLR to a reef tank, you'll need a good bit more light.

Yes I know I will have to upgrade but I just took them off my old 55g so I have some sort of light right now.

for a fowlr tank--the lighting is really to encourage some corraline growth and for personal viewing so it is a matter of personal choice how long they are on
