go with Sequence SW series or Reeflo series pumps.
If you have the cash get the pumps w/the BALDOR motor if not A.O.Smith is ok too.

You are trying to get 18,000-20,000 gph from a return pump on a 125 gallon tank?

Ahh ok.
I don't know of any pumps that go that high.
There are some of the bigger Dolphin Ampmasters in the 11.000 gph range.

you don't need that big of a pump!!! Yes you need that water turn over but NOT through the sump. What you need is a pump that'll do around 2,500gph-4,000gph. The rest you can have it through the use of powerheads (Tunze) or a closed loop system.

It would be very ineffective to have all that water move through your sump...the skimmer wouldn't be able to pick up much of the crud in there. Still I would recommend Sequence pumps that are pressure rated that way you loose little flow.

This is going to be a closed loop. I will have a pump for the sump and pump or pumps for flow. I am woundering which put out more gph and would like to only have one. plus power consumtion.

I think the biggest pump Sequence makes is the Hammerhead and that does 5800gph. It's the strongest pump that'll pump out that much water and still be energy efficient at 350 watts 3.0 amps.
I'm not too sure if you'll be able to get away with using only ONE pump. At least not with the flow you want to achieve.

To actually answer your question.....

There are very high volume pumps... such as ones used for commercial aquariums, gonna cost you, but if your looking for flow...

Example - http://www.aquaticeco.com/subcategories/1251/High-Volume-Medium--to-High-Head-Pumps/external%20pump/0

Going to need 3phase power though....

:D

Otherwise, I'm using Sequence pumps, and they are great, fairly quiet as larger externals go..... and actually pretty efficient...

LOL!!! Wow those flows are ridiculously high in every aspect! they'll certainly achieve your flow goals but the electric will kill you...

Here's a pretty good line up of the Sequence pumps.

Yes they are!! And some people wonder why public aquariums have a high ticket price!! But when you need to move alot of water... fast... it's the way to go.... of course there are alot larger ones that are custom made....

I think with the flow your looking at acheiving, a couple of those Sequence would work great.... Not sure I can speak of the new ones, but I have an older model with the Baldor motor, very well built.....

2farNorth, jtarmitage thanks guys, those are some crazy pumps and what power pigs. I have spoke to a co that my be able to lower all my electrical costs to 0 in 3-5 years and will be a savings off the bat. SOLAR Cal has great incentives to use alternate energy. Reefer check it out. my tank is in the plan stage now and will most likly be done in a year. The main reason I want this much flow is I have seen a large amount of growth since upgrading my flow. I know it is not just flow but find that it is as important as light and water quality.
