I've got a basic question since I'm not used to have a skimmer that actually works.

Should I open the air valve all the way? Is there an advantage or disadvantage to where the air valve is set?

for dry skimmate open it all the way and lower the cup most of the way or remove it and lower the cup all the way for dry wet,

for aggressive skim open it from closed to 2oclock position and raise cup higher, this method is prone to overflowing the cup with skimmate.

I treated my tank with erythromycin to kill some cyanobacteria (with the skimmer off). Now, when I try to turn the skimmer back on it goes completely ape $h*t.

I've tried raising the cup as high as it'll go, but the foam still rises too high. The only way I can keep it under control is to close off most of the airline, but then I get a tank full of microbubbles. I flooded the skimmer cup last night and tripped my GFCI outlet, so the skimmer is off today while I'm at work.

Any suggestions on how to get things working again?

water changes...

with a hang on or external skimmer you sometimes have to do big water changes after using certain products. otherwise they overflow

reeflo skimmers do this, most external skimmers have this happen occasionally.

I was finally able to get the skimmer under control. I performed a 10% water change the day after treating with erythromycin, but apparently that wasn't enough. I ended up turning on the skimmer and sucking out all the water that collected in the collection cup with a turkey baster. After it pulled out 2-3 gallons of water it finally settled down . . . ugh!

Treating with erythro was never a problem with the Remora!

Josh, the 2 oclock does seem to work best. and if you look at the white nylon screw in GSM's picture- its about the center of the black"cross ways piece" (love those "tecno terms" )
Thats where it worked best for me..
I did find the skimmer to be somewhat sensitive to things... even feeding frozen brine somethings would set it off!
But,,, The skimmer pulls out organics great! and thats what we want! :D
BTW, I believe the instuctions say do not close airline .

Thanks for the setup suggestion Charlie.

So far I'm liking the skimmer, the stuff that it pulls out of the water smells really foul. In comparison, the Remora Pro is a very expensive water aerator.
