you can get the Octo NW200 (the old model) and recirc it yourself and have an external skimmer for under $225!

would u be able to post me or send me some pics showing how u have yours set up, like how u have ur water pump and such, and what all is included with the purchase from the link you sent me

all you need is to feed it with a pump like a maxi-jet 1200, it comes with everything else, you just connect a 3/4 in hose to the barb with the valve on it and adjust the water level from there. Just plug the skimmer in and set the air valve. The way I have mine set up is a T on my return pump which is an oceanrunner 2500 625 gph. 1 thing i need to do is replace the stainless clamps with plastic. so basically
1. set the skimmer next to the sump
2. put the drain pipe over the side of the sump
3. connect a 3/4 in. tube from your feed pump
4. plug it in and make adjustments on the blue valve where the input is from your feed pump, and the air valve.

its very easy

In the case of skimmers, the cheap way is not necessarily worse, just older. A lot of times, the cheaper skimmers people are recommending to you here are just older technology, but still perfectly effective and viable options. Perhaps not quite as efficient, but still work just fine.

if your still interested in the euro reef, just look at the recirulating 135 and see how they made the second hole for the pump, the other hole is a smaller feed hole in the to 1/3 of the skimmer body... google it... euro reef's website even has the plumbing and seal kit you need to do the conversion for sale if you dont want to search for plubming parts. good luck

also, the customer service at petorama is pretty good. I had a question about te skimmer after I set it up and they responded to my email in a few hours. Ive had 2 euro reefs before and this was a big problem for them.

PmPrepGuy, there is all kinds of different ways to get water to a recirculating skimmer.
The preferred way by teeing off your overflow water to return water to the skimmer. This way there isn't any more energy wasted and you are getting the dirtiest water possible.
Teeing off the return pump is also an option.
Last but not least using a extra pump like a maxi-jet 1200.
I like the first option and most will tell ya its the best way to go.
Here is the DAS Club thread (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1250720&perpage=25&pagenumber=15) theres alot of good info in it. I also linked it to were there is pics of how to plumb/set it up.

okay, so ive got it all hooked up, i turn it on both pumps plugged in, and no air. i even took off the valve at the end of the air tube, still nothing. any ideas ?

its not sucking anything? do you have the pump on upside down?

Pour a little hot water down the air tubes. There might be a little salt build up in there and the hot water will dissolve it. If that doesn't work try blowing down one of the tubes while the pump is on. If air bubbles doesn't come out there is a blockage for sure. Can you hear that the pumps are working?
Did you end up getting a DAS EX-2?

PmPrepGuy

ive got the pump on the side hooked up just like all the other pictures ive seen, and i tried blowing air thru it but no bubbles but water does come out of the air line if i tilt it sideways so no blockage and i got the das ex-1 i believe

It sounds like your recirc pump is not running. Take it off and see if it pumps water.

just opened it and turned it on for a couple seconds and i see it spin, put the face back on turned it on and sounded like it was rattling put the two ends in the water and nothing no water movement at all coming out of it

Hmm.

For some reason the impeller is not spinning in the water/with the face on it.

I don't know what pump the DAS uses but you need to make sure the impeller is not broken or put together incorrectly.
