I plan to build a new canopy in order to use MH lighting.

can anyone guide me how to cut and glue mitered joints (i.e. made by mitering/beveling each corner at a 45-degree angle)?

What tools do you have? How you do it depends on what you're working with. If I were doing it, I'd use my table saw and tilt the blade to 45. That being said, it won't be a very strong joint and you may want to reinforce it. This can be done with splines, biscuits, glue blocks to name a few.

You really dont need to miter anything for a basic canopy,(go look at your kitchen cabinets) Butt joints will work just fine, just hide the edges by covering them in the front. You will need to miter any trim you use and the tool of choice is the miter saw. If your planning on using crown molding the starting Degree is around 31.2 ...you can fudge the bevel and miter from there to get it to cut perfect.

Ok then. I will hide the joint by the front panel.

The answer is POCKET SCREWS.
Just purchase a jig and bit and you can get a fantastic joint with the pocket screws and some white wood glue.

Pocket screws are an easy way to get a strong joint.

is the Kreg Tool kit a good one?

ABSOLUTELY!!! I finally bought one a month ago, and have been beating myself up over why did it take me so long to do it.

I second that. I bought the basic deal and a few weeks later went back and bought the whole big kit. It's a great tool!! Also, I built a canopy years ago with mitered corners and hated it. due to the constant changing of heat and moisture they were always opening and closing and never looked right. Go with a strong butt joint.

Is it in home depot/Lowes/Ace ?

Lowe's carries them. I saw it last night when I was over there.

Yes, you can get the kreg at the local hd/lowes. I bought the whole kit some time ago, but if you don't do a lot of woodworking, the mini jig kit should be all you need ($20).

I like feather joints because they're easy to cut and you just hammer your feather into the slot and trim the excess off and sand it smooth.
