View Full Version : New Tank

So I'm going to be building a new tank. It will be a 24" x 15" x 12" AIO with the display being 24" x 10" x 12". A friend of mine has convinced me to use a controllable Nanostream Tunze. I think it's a 6055 if I remember right?

I'd like to do some custom bracket to hang the tank on the wall, but have them attached to the wall behind the tank so it looks like it's floating on the wall. Like a standard L bracket but upside down and actually strong enough to support the tank (i think it should be around 180lbs give or take) but worst case I'll just find something nice to put it on.

I want an AIO b/c I don't want to go too big but want the main display area to be clean. To start I think I'll just put some live rock and/or cheato in the large second chamber and the heater, have the first chamber for mechanical filtration and the last for the pump. Maybe work a little carbon tray in there somewhere, and the float switch and line for the auto top off. I'd like to hopefully leave room so I could squeeze a small skimmer in the back later if I'd like.

For lighting I'll go with some t5's

I think thats it for ideas right now. I've attached a few pics I was playing around with, but never got a chance to get the chambers drawn in yet.

Enjoy. Look forward to feedback/suggestions

I know your hoping to do upside down L brackets to make it look like it's floating but if you can't find what you are looking for check out this thread http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1273507 . It's a long nano attached to a wall on L brackets with a cabinet around the bottom which allows you to hide electrical stuff like power strips, ballasts, and timers. This guy put a small refuge and a SQiD in his.

Yeah I have mixed feelings you make this tiny little tank thats super clean then add a canopy and under canopy/cabinet that are each the size of your tiny tank. Makes it a whole lot bigger, but I'll consider it, and thanks for the links

Following this thread. I am curious about the brackets... that puts all the weight on the poor lil screws holding the brackets to the wall ( 2 studs max ). Not to mention, most of the weight will be located towards the front because it has a false back overflow.

I'll just say that I am skeptical... because even angled steel will fold... or maybe because i cant see pictures here at work and will have to see when I get home.

yeah I'm not going with the wall brackets any more just leaving it on the bookshelf

Also, that doesn't look like much of a sandbed...

Are you going to be putting anymore sand in there?

Wonderful. How's the build coming along? Updates?

I would not trust a standard L bracket but somewhere there is a build thread that is similar to what your thinking. The builder used 1/4" steel t's I believe that were through bolted onto the sides of the studs and then drywalled around. The section of the t that came out from the wall was used to support a shelf that held the tank. After he trimmed it out there was only a few inches of material below the tank and the effect looked awesome. Maybe someone else remembers more about the thread.

From what i see, the teeth on the overflow are a bit low unless that is where you want the water line.

Pretty slow. Taking my time with this one... mostly b/c I want to do this one right which involves money and I just finished school and started working. But I am currently setting up a pico to hold me over

Yeah that is why I kinda gave up on the floating idea...it'd likely need to involve the brackets being mounted on the sides of the stud and the place is already finished and don't exactly feel like ripping through a wall right now ahah

Yeah initially I had intended to get the controllable tunzee and hopefully time it to get somewha of a wave going on in which case you would want the teeth quite long but it was just a bit too much money for right now... but i still might try it in the future
