Anybody got anything in their tank that emits light? Years ago, When I first got in to reef keeping, I had a tank in my bedroom and I used to see flashes of green light from the tank. at first I thought it was just reflections from the dial of my alarm clock, but then I found out I could induce the flashes by stomping my foot on the floor. Using a flashlight to see where the light was coming from I discovered it was from the brittlestars :eek2: Anybody else seen this? I've been back into reefkeeping now for over a year after a long break and haven't seen any bioluminescence from the current tank ever.

I have never seen brittle stars do that, but I really want to now. :(

I have a flame scallop that emits a small blue light

I also had some pods that drifted through the tank at night that flashed green light, but the brittlestar light, that was a shocker!

you can actually buy it. I dont know if you inject your corals or if they just soak it in but they glow in the dark. I didnt know about it untill buying phytoplankton cultures from a vendor i use and ran across them selling it. pretty neat stuff.

I heard if you get a couple of glow sticks from Home Depot you can cut them open and dump them in your tank to make EVERYTHING glow!

It happens in nature. It happend off a beach in california a few years back and made national news ...........nothing died.

That wikipedia article mentions brittlestars as one of the animals that can emit bioluminesence. So, I'm not crazy :)

I don't think Flame Scallops actually emit any light. The flashing you see is something of an optical illusion; it can't be seen in darkness.

does anyone know which type of brittle stars glow? ive seen jelly fish in the bays up here glow when touched at night. the wake of the boat would glow from churning them up.

The ones I had that glowed were LR hitchikers. Small greyish beige.

your saying someone poured glow sticks in the ocean????? and nothing died?


Edit BTW i know thats not what youmeant but you read the posts wrong, nobody said natural bioluminescence causes death, the dead comment was in reference to the glowstick comment.


ive done night dives in the keys off of pig pine key and seen the bioluminescence its cool.

yes then you said nothing died...

the reason death was mentioned was the glowstick comment.

i have seen bioluminescence in the wild in person on multiple occasions when i went to marine biology camp in grade school ;)

There was never anything mentioned about pouring glowsticks in the ocean........ i said it happens naturally. Thus far death will not happen if it happens NATURALLY. I have been talking about natural things this whole post. Read all the post not just the part you want to hear just to reply in a negative way.

i am not trying to argue, i was just pointing out to YOU that nobody mentioned natural bioluminescence as being associated with death.

what am i missing? I think my posts have been transparent.

It was mentioned as natural in the post i posted earlier and a list of animals to which of whom it happens to naturally. I never replied to anyting about a glowstick. I stated it happens naturally in the wild. The glow stick comment was thrown out there and was dismissed, never commented on. Im also not argueing just justifying that it is natural and can happen and nothing will die.

i know that nothing will die, the only reason you had to put the "nothing died" comment in your post was the previous "Glow then die" post that was in reference to the "glow stick" comment

your post was the one that tied the glowstick death into the discussion of natural bioluminescence.

I wonder if the lack of sightings of bioluminescence in our tanks these days is due to the prevalence of LED night lights making the spotting of bioluminescence less likely. When I used to see it years ago in my tank, the room was totally dark.
