Clean up crew!!

I always get compliments on my sand bed, and I credit it to lots of brittle stars, nassarius snails, cerith snails, bristleworms, and hermits.

I also use a turkey baster to clean my sand bed before each time I do a water change.

Mainly time. If you notice .... mature tanks have the cleanest sand. BUT... what others said is part of the equation.

Yeah, the critters living in your sandbed have a lot to do with it, including ones you add like goby's, etc. I do vacuum my sand wit a siphon as a means to get my water out during my occasional water changes too...and of course...maturity in the system means there'll be less algae, cyanobacteria, etc to junk up the sand bed as well.

You probably don't want to try all those critters at the same time. Things like a diamond goby and sandsifting star will compete for food and starve each other.

I've got a sand sifting star in my 120 and wouldn't think of adding a sand sifting goby to the mix.
