Adjusting a reef to new lighting

What is the correct/better way to adjust a well established reef (PC lighting) to a new stronger MH lighting system?
Is it to incrementally change:(a) the distance of the lamps from the water or (b) the hours of lighting?

You could do either really. Height "might" be the best for this situation. If you can't do that, just adjust hours. Generally when I've switched, I usually do 3-4hrs for the first week. Then add an hour every 2-3 days till at normal photo period.
