Saw this in another thread:

"when you all glue your Acro sideways so they grow faster"

Is this true, what does it mean, and how do I do it? LOL

In relative terms, the coral has more surface area facing the light. Therefore, it has more energy to build a coral skeleton.

true dat.

looks worse at first but you will get much a more multi-branched colony much quicker (Not that anything happens quickly here)

it will grow a larger base quicker i think you get more full looking colonies when you mount this way

so lets say I have a 1 inch piece of...I don't know how about Digitata. If I glue it sideways to a piece of rubble rather than standing up as I usually do, it will grow faster? won't I kill the portion that I glued to the rubble possibly causing the 'deadness' to spread to the rest of the coral?

Figure this....In nature if a piece of a colony were to get snapped off....it wouldnt land sticking straight up.

Not the best pics but this is one that I glued about 2 months ago. See how you start getting vertical growth for the whole length of the piece. Yes it will kill the underside but the top will take off.

Bingo... The coral has more surface area to encrust from so it will encrust faster. The faster it lays down a base the sooner it will grow up… The larger the base the the more branches it can send up..

Coral glued on its side = faster growth. Eric Borneman has demonstrated this on more than one occasion. It is the best way to mount SPS frags if you have the space.

Just my opinion though. :)

pro: It will grow faster due to "more exposure" to light

con: Since more surface area is glued, the chance of losing the whole frag is considereably greater. Since the whole stick acts like a base, you won't have enough area to cut off a healthy part should the base starts to RTN.

EEEP! Makes you not want to learn on a $40 - $100 frag . .

Glue or Putty in this application? *sorry can't see pics at work on photobucket*

I've always had success with Aquamend (home depot stuff) and Superglue Gel. Best dynamic duo since kobe and shaq.. lol
