View Full Version : Flow in a 20L (30x12x12)

I am planning on keeping softies and maybe a LPS.

I was going to use the AC110 or AC70 for flow and maybe as a fuge. The AC110 is 500gph and the AC70 is 300gph. I think the AC110 might be hard to control flow so I think I will go with the AC70.

Option 1:
AC70 = 300gph
Knano = 240gph (x2)
Total = 780gph flow in a 20l. That's 39 times turnover.

Option 2:
AC70 = 300gph
K1 = 400gph (x2)
Total = 1100gph flow in a 20l. That's 55 times turnover.

Which is the better option? Any insights welcome.
Cheers

I would go option 3:
AC70 x2 =600 gph or 30 times turnover which should be fine for what your doing. You can always add more turnover if you need to later.

I didn't think of option 3. It's cheaper than the other options and more space for a fuge. Would I not need some type of power head for a "different type" of flow? The AC70 flow I thought was more surface agitation. Again any insights welcome.

option 1, its perfect you want 30-40

I have an AC20 (carbon/mechanical/surface skimmer) and an AC110 (Heater/Fuge) and a Koralia Nano on my 10 gallon. If you're going the fuge route you may want to consider lowering the flow in the fuge down.

I took a dremel to the impeller on my AC110 and it's got reasonable fuge flow now and lots of room for rocks/chaeto.

If I had 30" tank I would get 2xAC110 (14" long each). In my tank, the AC110 and the AC20 are pretty much touching each other, and a mm or 2 from the ends of the tank... making full use of the width at least. =)

That should be sufficient flow for the dislay tank. As far as a fuge goes then thats a different story. Would the fuge be a hang on type or a sump/fuge under a stand style?
Either way you would need some type of return pump depending on what you have in mind.

I was hoping hang on fuge, but with two AC70's I guess there would be no room left. What do you think about:
AC70=300gph
Knano=240gph (x2)
and another AC70 modded into a fuge=next to zero gph.
Total=780gph flow in a 20l.

If you're going to mod one into a fuge, use the 110... I've got the 110 on my 10 gallon, my friend has the AC70 fuge on his 3 gallon. The AC70 is way too small for a tank your size to be effective IMO.
