How often do you change your bulb?

I have one 250W 14K pheonix halide running over my 60 gal cube. The bulb has been running for about 9 mos. I have heard people say you should change halide bulbs every 6 mos and others say every 12 mos. I am having good growth in all of my corals and minimal pest algea growth.

When should i be thinking about getting a new bulb, and what benefits am i going to see?
