View Full Version : Which Nano?

I am thinking that with the lack of space, this may the best bet. I have read some posts and notice that some of these involve many upgrades. So heres my question:

Which of the Nano's requires the least amount of upgrades and which one is the best?

1) Nano Cube 28 Gallon HQI for $450 including stand

2) Red Sea Max 34 Gallon with stand for $700

I don't want to keep putting money into a Nano when I could spend it up front for a 55 gallon rectangle.

Thanks.

I talk about my NC28 HQI here:

The Red Sea Max looks very nice and would probably require lesser mods. The main difference between them is lighting (MH v.s. PC's) and with that comes heat (You will need to either rig up a fan with a controller or get a chiller for the 28). Not sure how the RSM's do with keeping the tank temps down, especially with summer coming.

CAD 39g pro/sig tanks are amazing, only mod I plan on adding to mine is an extra 10g refugium.

I am looking pretty hard at the 39G CAD. The only thing I don't like is the slightly bowed front but I think I can get past it. What a sweat tank it is. There are a few others in that category that are pretty nice as well. We need to start the ultimate nano comparison thread. Why not make this it???

I like the rms over the nanocube.

Honestly equipment wise the cad 39g probably has the best, of course you can mod anything. I did not really want a bowed tank either, but I got past it :)

What I like about CAD in general is that they seem to upgrade their tanks off of their customer suggestions.

Too answer "your" question and NOT suggest what "I" have like so many do.

Nanocube 28 HQI. The lights on the RSM are very limiting, no lamp choices. The PC lamps (no they are not true T-5, its a marketing scheme) are dead tech. But remember..the Nanocube WILL need a chiller. I am sure this will get me flamed...this forum is full of RSM lovers. :love2:

p.s. Dont ever get a 55 for a reef tank. Got to be the worst shape ever devised...too narrow and too tall for a reef.

All of the tanks are nice in there own ways. Its kinda a personal preference like mark426 was geting at. My biocube was a good bang for the buck and easy to mod to.

At first I was looking at the CAD 39G Signature but I kinda like the sump and everything being below. I may go with the Pro. I think it has a much cleaner look, kinda like the new Elos. Decisions, decisions...

if i had to choose between the two, i would go with the JBJ just because it's less expensive and offers similar features to the RSM. you can get a chiller or a controller with the money you have.

if cost isn't an issue and you're open to other considerations, the CAD 39g is pretty slick tank. might be worth it to check it out.

I like all the all-in-ones but IMO if I had it to do over Id buy a rimless.

The tanks are usually a little below eye level when they are on the stand and the black band across the top of the tank really obstructs vision on the upper corals in the tank.

im not going to necessarily say to go with the solana or anything but I would look into the overall aesthetics as well as functionability.

here is my AP24 with the 150w sunpod
Im standing straight up looking at my tank from about 3 feet away.
See how the black band sucks? lol

Just my two cents
Good luck!

i like the bio cube - all the parts are easy to access and get if you need replacement stuff - it seems more solid than the other tops i have had on all in one nanos - the fans are also the quietest i have had - i did upgrade the pump and put one of the rotating heads on the return.- the only drawback would be the narrow back chambers if you need to get something down at the bottom.
the top fits tight - as far as chilling, i leave the little hatch open and if necessary, have a small desk fan blowing across it.
