Ouch. I've had it happen many times. Very depressing. I could never figure out the cause though.

RTN is a symptom of MANY ailments. It is not s disease in and of itself. So, to say, "what is the cause", is like asking "what is the cause of my leg hurting?" It can be many things.

I have had Acros RTN, but if I clipped of a frag in an attempt to save some that would RTN too, just a a day later. I have never recovered anything from RTN. For me recently I can guess I had a temperature issue. I lost like 3 colonies and a frag. One colony was 100% healthy but them my tank got warm and that was it. At one store I used to buy from, his whole tank of newly ordered colonies RTN(about 20).

Healthy live stock and healty tanks go hand and hand.

Oh and RTN happens fast.

One day healthy, next polyps not out, next day some white showing, next moring all gone. It happens fast.
