achillies tang question

Hey liveaquaria this is colin chircop and i just wanted to let you know that the torch i recently bought is awsome! beautiful color and movement. Any ways i have a question, when do you guys usually get in achillies tangs? I am looking to add one to my 110gallon custom reef. Thankyou very much and i look forward to doing business in the future

The availability of specimens is dependent on what we have in our aquatics center. This depends on what we are able to harvest from the wild and which tank raised specimens are available at the time. Our holding facility does receive daily shipments, so the stock can change from day to day. We are unable to give you a specific date as to when we will have the specimen in stock. Thank you for your post. We would not recommend adding an Achilles Tang to a 90 gallon aquarium. These are recommended to be house in a tank no smaller than 100 gallons. This specimen is very rare and would make a great center piece of a large salt water aquarium. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Thank you for the response if i had that 100 gallon tank would the achilles be ok in it. Or would that still be to small.

Thank you for your response. The Achilles Tang (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+43+325&pcatid=325&N=0) is a difficult fish to keep and is suggested for experts only. The water quality should be monitored closely and you will want to make sure that the fish is eating the correct foods. As long as you follow these recommendations, you should be able to keep an Achilles Tang (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+43+325&pcatid=325&N=0) in a 100 gallon tank with plenty of swimming area.

OK thank you for the response. I am not totally sure if i want to do get one because of this. But would a Powder blue tang be easier to keep then the achilles.

Thank you for your question. Although the Powder Blue Tang (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+43+366&pcatid=366&N=0) is not as difficult to acclimate into a home aquarium as the Achilles Tang, we still recommend a 100 gallon tank with plenty of swimming room. Since Tangs are more susceptible to lateral line disease, fin erosion, ich and other skin parasites, it is always an excellent idea to monitor water quality closely and offer plenty of marine based seaweed and algae.

Both the Powder Blue and Achilles are highly suceptible to Ich and need an 8 week QT to monitor. I got my Achilles from the Diver's Den three weeks ago and he has been in QT since. He managed to get ich 2 days after his arrival. I dropped salinity to 1.009 and he is now doing great, with no sign of ich. He will remain there for the next 5 weeks and then be added to my 300.
I think that putting either of the fish mentioned, in a tank less than 180 to start, would drastically decrease its chances of surviving. Also, you need highly oxygenated and strong flow to keep them happy (more so the Achille's). For your tank size I would stay away from either. These fish also get very territorial; the less tank room, the meaner they get.
