I bought this almost a year ago...

Just wondering if I am able to take that aluminum casing apart and turn it into my own retrofit kit... so I can hook up the reflectors and bulbs to the inside of a canopy.

Thoughts?

can't you just fix the existing unit to the top of the canopy?

If not I would sell it or use it on another tank and buy the retro kit

Howdy there Capn.

Yes I can, it has a place for 2 thread screws but I'm having a hard time figuring out how I'm going to do it. I'm not the technical woodworking type.

I wonder if the pressure from lifting the canopy each day would eventually rip the whole system off. Do you know what I mean?

By the way how was that storm? I'm somewhat near you, wasn't too bad here :)

Hmm you know what... I'm going to do a similar design as this.

Except I'll make a flap door for the front.

How high up can I put the TX5 T5's before the light loses intensity?

Tank is 20" deep.

chatyak,

You can mount the TX5 directly to the top of our wood canopy. As you stated there are two threaded holes on top of your TX5 (1/4-20 size thread). Mark the inside of the top of the canopy to line up to the thread holes. Drill a through hole. Then use a 1/4-20 bolt through the top of the canopy with a washer and screw it into the fixture. Now your fixture is secured to it. Your fixture is light (around 16lbs). You will not have to worry about the fixture ripping off of the canopy. One last thing. If you decide to place the fixture inside the canopy you will need to drill vent holes on either side of the canopy to line up with the vent holes on the fixture.

Thank you,

Tom
