Just got back from California visiting my brother for 2 weeks. We saw on the news about the heat wave that was taking place here on the east coast while we were away. Never had a problem before because we have central air. However, our central air broke. The friend keeping an eye on the house never called our other contact left in case of fish tank emergencies. Got in tonight and found cloudy water in tank. Of course by now you know that this couldn't be good. It looks like we've lost a bunch of corals including some huge frogspawns and hammers we've had for several years. Lights are off as it is 2 am but most fish look like they've pulled through. Will be doing water changes and pulling out dead skeletons tomorrow.
Vacations sometimes produce more stress!

Goes without saying, though I am going to, sorry about the loss.

The bottom line is that vacations are more lethal to this hobby than any pathogen, nuisance creature, or simpla malfunction. My wife is trying to talk me into going away for a few days, and its' stories like this that just give me the shakes just thinking about it. I can't tell you how bad I feel for you, and in case you haven't already thought of it, run carbon, and some more carbon.

thanks for the posts.
I am on my second water change.
Worst thing about it is that we're supposed to have some friends staying over this weekend coming up.
By the way, does anyone know if home owners insurance covers a lost like this? anyone ever report such a lost?
Probably not worth it if the rates go up.
Just checking.

I think it's worth asking your insurance agent. Make them earn their keep.

I don't think we will ever go away longer then a couple days again to much money invested in this hobby. I would hate to have anything happen to all our livestock.
Well maybe just to one our nipping domino damsel. I don't think I would shed a tear for that little bastard.
Our big vacation trip is an overnighter right down the road from Mr coral, lol.
Luckily we have trained our 21 year old daughter on how to keep our system going in case of an emergency.
All that said, I am very sorry for your loss. It still looks like you have a little life in that coral maybe some of it will make a come back

Sorry for your troubles.

Leaving for a week at the beach in two weeks. My nephew will be watching the reef. ... I am very worried

Two years ago I returned to hair algae 5" long! I don't know what he tank sitter was doing with the feedings! I left him those seven day pill containers with premeasured food and everything! It looked like he was dumping fertilizer right into the tank!

I use the automatic feeders that dispense food one or two times a day. they have worked really well over the years. You can set how much food goes into the tank each feeding. A pinch of food varies greatly from person to person especially someone not used to feeding fish.
