starting QT with cellpore media and LR

I've read here numerous times that an acceptable way of starting a QT is using a HOB that had been in the DT and adding DT water - and presto! it is fish ready. I started a QT last week using cellpore media that had been in a DT sump for months, adding DT water, adding some cured LR, and using a new HOB. With these (hopefully) equivalent setups, will there be no ammonia and nitrites ever detectable? So am I ready to add a fish without seeing the classic ammonia and nitrite spikes, and waiting to see nitrates (which would probably be detectable from the getgo because I used DT water)? Thanks.
