I am looking at getting an ocean runner pump for my sump return but have a question. It appears the 2500 will overpower my overflow, so can it be throttled back by a ball / gate valve if needed? My overflow is rated at 300gph (not sure why when it has a 1" bulkhead) and it looks as if the OR will put out about 400gph at 5.5' of head.

Thoughts?

yes it can be throttled back, but in that situation i would go with an eheim 1250. about the same price and the eheim will be much more reliable ime.

I have been a long time ehiem user, I also bought a OR 2 years ago. Its been just as quiet and reliable as my ehiems.
If ehiem made a pump as big as the OR 6500 i would have bought ehiem for my return.
You cant go wrong with either. JMO But i would get the 1250 as twon stated because the price is similar, and ehiem parts are a little easier to obtain.

I wonder about everyone's obsession with eheim. I have 4 of them, and while they're nice a quiet, IMO, not that great. They take TONS more power than a comparable OR or Hydor...etc. They run quite hot IME as well.

When you have ehiems that outlast the tanks they are on thats good stuff.
